To pay or not to pay-Migros city.

Well I went to the restaurant in the new Migros city ( Zürich ). Wanted to go to the toilet and saw that the bastards want 1 Frank for the service. Thats offensive. I can't think of one restaurant in Switzerland that makes you pay a frank to use their toilet. So I did a high jump over the barrier.!Fick them.

If you are a paying customer, I don't see why you should be charged to use their facilities.

Re: To pay or not to pay-Migros city.

Our local Coop has free toilets - they used to be open but kept getting vandalised. Now you have to ask the cashier for a key. I know some places like McDo's have a coin operated loo entrance, customers can ask for a "jeton" - non-customers stump up a chuff.

Maybe Migros City operates something similar?

Cheers,
Nick

Coop city in Biel/Bienne does. It gives you a 1chf voucher towards a coffee so if you're a coffee drinking paying customer at the restaurant you lose nothing but the random person coming in off the street has to pay.

If you are caught, you might be banned from the Migros. They can do this.

Migros pay for the cleaner's wage, the water, the electricity, & maybe the towels, so you could share the cost couldn't you?

Re: To pay or not to pay-Migros city.

Are you sure there wasn't something on the receipt about claiming the 1 franc back? We hit this problem in the Migros restaurant in Bern, but you can get the money back by showing the receipt for your coffee/food to the cashier or toilet attendant iirc (been a while since we were in there).

McD's in Bern use a key code which is printed on your receipt.

It's all to stop people coming in off the street and using the toilets free.

Actually I think there are lot more free toilet facilities here than in any other European country I've lived in.
Sure there are free toilets in France but not ones you'd actually want to go in.

Re: To pay or not to pay-Migros city.

The problem of the Migros, and the charging for the use of toilet facilities, is a direct result of the increasing popularity of mobile phones.

This seemingly strange correlation is explained in that the preponderance of mobile phones has rendered the old style telephone cabins uneconomical, and ultimately leading to a drastic reduction in their numbers. These cabins naturally served a dual, or secondary, purpose. In addition to providing telephone facilities, these cabins provided an area for relief for those who required, well, relief.

Denied of their traditional facilities, these one time call box users sought relief in the Migros (and other stores/restaurants), forcing their proprietors to start imposing charges to accommodate the increasing demand.

So the people who, in the past, use the conveniences provided by Swisscom, are now forced to vault barriers in the Migros to obtain the same free service that they previously enjoyed.

Most inconvenient.

Another location of choice are the SBB waiting rooms by the tracks. (or at least they tend to smell like someone's been relieving themselves in there )
