If you pay less here than you would in the U.S. then you'll pay the difference to the IRS.
Only on the amount above the income and housing exclusion, and at 100k, he will not be above the exclusion.

Re: Moving from Indianapolis (cheap) to Rotkreuz

Given your income level, I concur that your US tax liability should be pretty small given the foreign earned income exclusion.

Rotkreuz is a nice suburb - very new and clean with good recreational facilities. I always enjoy visiting our friends that live there.

All the best!

Look at Switzerland as a life experience,
not a get rich thing.

It is in the middle of Europe and
offers great travel opportunities.

Your income liability to the US will
Be minimal.

Re: Moving from Indianapolis (cheap) to Rotkreuz

Your liablity to the US will be minimal, your first 99KUSD is tax free and you get a housing credit.

I am a bit older, if I were in my 20's/early 30's with no family, I could probably live off of 100 CF, but it would be tough. It is very expensive here, and as other posters have said about travel..that too costs. BUT, with all that said, its a great experience. If you are young and into a big "to do" party scene, this might not be the place for you. I lived in AMS before here, and although I like the Netherlands, CH is much more up my speed. Lots to do even in bad weather.

Just know its not the US, don't come here trying to compare. You will ask for a lot of care packages from back home and order from the US food store at first..but you'll adapt! Good luck..feel free to PM me.

Rotkreuz is a tiny village, won't you be bored there? It's also not easy and certainly not cheap to find accommodation. You could of course live in Luzern and commute to Rotkreuz, definitely the option to take if you are under 30.

If I was debt free I'd agree. However, after interest I will owe the student-loan-bank $100,000. So I need to be wary of the finances.
Calculate what you will need to payout on a monthly basis to the US debts.
For the moment, if you earn in CHF and pay down debt in USD you will already be 15% ahead on that payment (thanks to last weeks currency shift).

100,000 gross should be about 6,100 CHF monthly net. You could find an apartment in a large range of prices...assume 2.25k/mt for something you wont be embarrassed over. Assume 250 for health insurance, and about 200 more for utility/cell service. Say 1000k into savings/debt as well. Assume 141/mth for a regional GA for transport (3500 for national) That leaves you with 2400 CHF to live on. That averages about 74 francs a day to live on (food, drink, entertainment). That is doable as long as do not go out too often.

I am talking recreation - ie. sports, playgrounds for kids... and the Migros golf course is right there if you like golf.

Have no idea about bars or restaurants...

He could also move direction Zürich, like in Horgen or Wädenswil.

Then you have more Access to social life, AND the train
Connection is pretty good.
