FEBESESWI-2 = FEEL BETTER about SETTLING in SWITZERLAND

We held the first
FEBESESWI = FEEL BETTER about SETTLING in SWITZERLAND.
on 10th December 2014, and had good time. Thanks to all who joined us.

Anyone interested in FEBESESWI-2?

I’m considering the following dates.... any preferences, anyone?
  • Wednesday 11th February, day and/or evening
  • Thursday 12th February 9h to 13h
  • Friday 20th from 13h and into the evening
  • Tuesday 24rd March from 16h into the evening
  • Wednesday 25th February, day and/or evening

Once I have some idea of the general preference, I will start a forum “event”.

WHY ARE WE MEETING?
Lonely, culture-shocked, bored, weary, and most likely here to stay?
This get-together is for people who are trying to find their way living in Switzerland, who might be feeling lonely or cut off from their familiar world. There is evidently a real need to lament (and I think that makes sense, and yes, it has its place), and we’ll especially be sharing ideas to try to feel better.

Of course I don't have all the answers! But I do speak, read and write German fluently, and live here permanently; I’m so-called “integrated”. Disclaimer: While you are here, I am very likely to affirm: “Learn the local language”, because, in my journey towards feeling less foreign, EVERYTHING I ever tried worked much, much better for being able to communicate with people from here.

I hope that other long-termers with a command of German, and local Swiss folk, will join us and contribute to a better understanding of Swiss structures and help to open possibilities. Lonely or bored folks who are really here for only a few months are very warmly welcome, too, for the company. Our determined focus will, however, be on how to settle into life in Switzerland, (for however long you’re here) practically, culturally and emotionally.

WHOM TO BRING:
  • Yourself, and anyone you like (perhaps from your German class) and, if you would like to, your partner (also fine to join us later).
  • Naturally, babies and children are very welcome, as I trust you’ll bring/do whatever they need to feel comfortable, so that we can still do our “work”.

WHAT TO BRING: (please see also CATERING)
  • links, pamphlets, books, tips you have found helpful up till now, for coping in Switzerland, or as an immigrant, or as a stay-at-home-spouse, or as a growing person.
  • any documents, instructions, etc. that you can’t read and hopefully those of us who understand German will be able to explain them to you.

WHAT WE’LL DO:
  • Talk, either just socially, or in a more formal meeting structure (depending on who turns up, and how we feel on the day)
  • Commiserate
  • Specify the needs
  • Brainstorm on what could help
  • Try to answer specific questions
  • Swap coping strategies, teach each other any cultural, organisational or psychological steps that have actually helped anyone to feel better
  • Think through the pros and cons of potential endeavours
  • Work towards realistic expectation management
  • Collect (on paper, from the internet), share and structure information about all sorts of things on offer in Zurich and surrounds (or Switzerland in general)
  • Search for contacts for interests you already have, but haven’t found here, yet.
  • Laugh
  • Eat

WHAT THIS IS NOT:
This event is NOT a therapeutic session.
This event is NOT a marketing opportunity for any particular group, school, business, organisation, philosophy or religion.
This is not a place for abusive behaviour.
No drugs.
No smoking inside.

CATERING
Sorry, I won’t provide any. I also don’t pledge to tidy up/decorate before you arrive J. Please bring anything you’d like to eat or drink, just for yourself or else to share, as it suits you. And while you’re here, please help yourself and/or serve the others present. Thanks very much. Kitchen infrastructure is here, for anyone who’d like to use it.

WHERE?
In my home in Zurich-Affoltern (not to be confused with Affoltern-am-Albis). It is very easily reached by public transport. Parking is very limited, and fines are issued swiftly to anyone who parks illegally.
The address, phone number, and instructions on how to get here will be mailed to those who register.

Sorry, I've made typos in the dates.
Please, could a moderator perhaps edit my original post and overwrite the dates list with the following corrected text? Thank you.

Re: FEBESESWI-2 = FEEL BETTER about SETTLING in SWITZERLAND

Hello again!
From the above posts and some private messages, and on the understanding that ya can't please everybody, I've now narrowed the selection down to:

Friday 20th February from 17h into the evening
Tuesday 24th February from 17h into the evening
Wed 25th February from 17h into the evening.

Preferences, anyone? Based on these, I hope to post an event soon...

Re: FEBESESWI-2 = FEEL BETTER about SETTLING in SWITZERLAND

Hello again,
not sure what to make of this....

Last time we had lots of "yes" replies, and lots more saying they'd like to come along but couldn't make that date.
This time, although there've been many views of this thread (and they weren't all me!) the only people planning to be there are you Princess Duck, you Wolli, and me.

I suppose I could/should deduce there isn't as much need for such an Event as I had first thought. Or perhaps people just don't have time or energy. If the registration stays this low, I might consider postponing the event.

Re: FEBESESWI-2 = FEEL BETTER about SETTLING in SWITZERLAND

One last try...

if this event does not get a few more registrations by Wednesday 18th February midnight, I'm going to postpone it indefinitely. (Sorry princessduck, sorry Wolli).

Maybe this just isn't the right time for some folks. Or maybe there are still people who've been considering joining us, but who just haven't got around to registering yet. Anyone? Or perhaps all those many people who posted, a few months ago, feeling bored, lonely and culture-shocked, have now settled in and are feeling better... which would be the best news!

Re: FEBESESWI-2 = FEEL BETTER about SETTLING in SWITZERLAND

Please note that this Event will not take place on the date planned.
I'm considering it indefinitely postponed.

Last time many people registered as "yes" and "maybe" and many more wrote to say they would have liked to have joined us, but that date didn't suit them.
This time there have been very few registrations, so maybe that means this isn't the right time for such a FEBESESWI get-together, or perhaps - and that would be much better - it means that many more folk are feeling content about their settling in Switzerland and, at the moment, don't need this kind of help.

I may well offer to revive this Event later, if there ever seem to be (as there were just before the first FEBESESWI) a lot of people posting on the Forum about how lonely, bored, or culturally disoriented they were feeling. If that happens again later, by all means, let's meet then, to work towards feeling better about settling in Switzerland.

All the best to everyone!
