Huh? Who mentioned 1948?

YOU for example. The crime you mentioned got up after 1946 and became rampant in the 1950ies. My grandparents in Schaffhausen in about 1952 got new locks at the doors of their house. And all this was a while before Schengen. The Schengen-Dublin Agreements gave more power to the Police here and not less. The BorderPatrol of customs can do controls up to 20 kms into the country and no longer just 200 meters

I blame the Eidgenossen. All that smiling and grüezi and chüechichästli - it's just a front. The moment your back's turned, they'll swipe anything that isn't nailed down.

It is NOT chüechi but CHUCHI the kitchen

Guys, I think you should visit Romania before having any opinion about it.

Or at least have some Romanian friends, we're kind of kind. Ok, not me specifically, but you get the point, don't you?

Tremendous pics. The Harrier (the plane CH should have bought instead of the F-18) was at least 100 meters above the chap

Hi there.

I felt like I just needed to vent a bit because yesterday, in the Coop, I had my shopping stolen. Maybe I was naive, but in the eight months I have been here, and having always had maybe a bag or two of shopping from other stores, which I'd leave in the umbrella stand area, I have never had a problem!
Sorry to hear about your loss. Nonetheless:

Let's say you did that twice a week, that means your bags went missing one time out of sixty or more. Unattended bags that are obviously very easily stolen, and though unlikely it may even have been some innocent mix-up.

Frankly, if that isn't safe I wonder what is. Where else in the world would one *even consider* leaving bags unattended?

Well, I shop there at least twice a week and usually have had a bag or two that I left in the lobby area, where people leave their granny trolleys and umbrellas, and like I said, it's never been a problem. It's a small village, and not like I was in a big city. People here are generally honest people. I know nowhere is perfect and times have changed since I was a kid and my grandparents slept with their house unlocked and balcony doors open! I just never have never had an issue with leaving groceries in that area. I obviously would never have left really high-value shopping (like electricals or jewelry etc.).
I guess I was just unlucky, but I think I will leave any bags with customer service or the cashier in future. I know they are not obliged to look after stuff from rival stores (so I never liked to ask), but they know me quite well in there now, and the manager obviously knows about the theft.

Crime rate has been rising in Switzerland because the world is getting smaller and everyone and everything trends towards the average - if you're in a criminal gang in Marseille, why wouldn't you drive down to super-wealth, soft-touch Geneva? Of course you would. By the way, check out Martin Killias at the University of Zurich who is by far the most knowledgable person on crime in Switzerland.

Re: Someone stole my shopping!

If you ever have a broken umbrella which you want to get rid of, leave it in the umbrella stand at the front of the store. It will disappear.

When I used a shopping trolley I never left it outside a store because of the risk it would disappear. I was able to hook it onto my grocery cart. It was never a problem to have it in the store with me.

I really cannot comprehend leaving shopping bags of any kind outside a store. If it is clearly from a different shop, it will not be a problem at the check out.

Want to add to this: If you take receipts with you when out shopping, you should be fine.

E.g. you shopped in Coop and still have things to buy in Migros. Take the Coop receipt with you, take the Coop goods in any bag you wish (Coop/Migros/Aldi/knitted by grandma/whatnot); if the cashiers ask you why you have a bag full of [whatever] with you which you aren't unloading onto the conveyor belt along with your basket of Migros goods, show them the Coop receipt of the goods in the bag and they can check the bag to make sure that you're not trying to screw them out of payment for any Migros goods if they wish by comparing the Coop receipt to the items in the bag. Easy peasy.

Along with that, you should of course always keep an eye on your bags and baskets.

There's a lot more poverty than meets the eye.
Perhaps it was too tempting for somebody in need (this doesn't excuse it of course).
I wouldn't leave groceries unattended even in a small village.

Re: Someone stole my shopping!

The only time I've had something nicked in a store was when I'd put the last 50% off Schwarzwaldertorte in my cart and was looking at some other items nearby. While my back was turned, someone nicked the cake but left all my other items, some of which also had the 50% off sticker. Maybe there's something about cakes...

Romanian larcenists for sure . Switzerland used to be a very safe country before the fall of the Iron Curtain. Our country is full of Eastern European criminals. Same thing in Germany, UK, France, Italy...

Sorry for your loss!
Hey guys, please be careful when making such statements. There are many respectful romanians working in Switzerland. Please use your brain when talking and not "Blick"s.
I have a really stupid colleague in the office. He is so stupid he might be (British or American or...you name it). Would this sound fair? I guess not.
And please think that being from (UK or Us or...) doesn't make you smarter than someone from "those awful countries countries" (how impolite).

Really sorry for your loss. I have to say that I also leave my shopping like that and in almost 6 years here, I naver had such incidents. It's not nice to realize that after spending half a day for the shopping plus the money, it all went away. Of course the criminal must be punished and hope you'll find it. But let's admit this is not the end of the world and let this be the worst that can happen.

Well said. I'm surprised that people are willing to admit to such prejudiced views.

I'm surprised that such statements are done by people that would pretend about themselves they are well educated.

Who cares who stole the shopping. Its the OPs fault, why on earth would you leave your shopping unattended, would you do this in your home country? Totally naive, then asking the supermarket and Police to check the CCTV, wasting peoples time for being stupid.

Tobias M comes from London, which probably explains her cynicism.

London is populated almost entirely by criminal scum.

Fortunately, Switzerland isn't.

Crime in London is statistically insignificant. There is no crime in Switzerland at all because it costs 700 CHF to call the cops.

It's pretty sad to read comments like that, when all I was doing was what I have always done without any problems at all. Why should I be made to feel guilty for still trusting that people are generally decent here, as this has been my experience since moving here (and throughout my life visiting here)?

I have had times where I had my own money worries, and didn't know how I would make ends meet, but I didn't go out thieving other people's belongings. There's no excuse. I am sure that if people are starving or really in trouble, there are food banks or charities, for those who really need it. Welfare here is not as soft and easy as the UK, but if people are really in need, I am sure there must be help for the basics to live.
