Someone stole my shopping!

Hi there.

I felt like I just needed to vent a bit because yesterday, in the Coop, I had my shopping stolen. Maybe I was naive, but in the eight months I have been here, and having always had maybe a bag or two of shopping from other stores, which I'd leave in the umbrella stand area, I have never had a problem! it is where people often leave their shopper trolleys (old granny trolleys, I call them). I never left anything of high value - just everyday food and household shopping, but still... Yesterday evening, I had a bit of shopping from the Migros with me, which I left in that in the same area of the Coop I always have. When I got what I needed from the Coop, I was just shocked to see that both bags I'd left there had gone! I couldn't believe that someone would take someone's groceries/household shopping! Maybe in London or in big cities, but this is a pretty safe and respectable area! I guess, like I said, I was naive... Thieves are everywhere, and they'll take anything that isn't nailed down! From now on, I suppose I'll have to ask customer services in-store if they'll keep hold of any bags I have when I go into other stores, or buy a granny trolley and hide it in there and hope they don't find it! It's a pain to drag it all around in the supermarket (obviously I don't drive). Has anyone else had anything stolen since they moved here?

I did speak to the supermarket manager and asked him if he would check any CCTV, and I am also going to report it to the police to see if they can get hold of the CCTV from the surrounding shops/bank/post office that the thief/thieves would have needed to walk past/around to get to and from the Coop. I know it was only groceries, but it's the principle, and this has really pissed me off because it is not cheap to buy groceries here, and I've never had anything like this happen in the time I've been here!

Nonetheless, I'm trying to be positive and focus on the kind people who handed in my purse on the two occasions I dropped it, and the other kind person who handed in my watch when I lost it here last year! I have become quite obsessive with everything when I'm out now!

Re: Someone stole my shopping!

Sorry to hear about your bad experience, unfortunately as you say there are people willing to relieve you of your possessions everywhere, even in 'respectable' areas.
A few years ago a 'granny trolley' was taken from the Coop in Baden, there was a notice on the 'For Sale' board asking for it to be returned, so I wouldn't even leave one of those unattended if I were you.

OP seems to be quite keen to relieve herself of her possessions:

Re: Someone stole my shopping!

Oh look i think I'd better make a confession here - a couple of years ago, I went to migros and got some shopping then went to the hairdressers. OH came to the hairdressers and said he would go home with the kids in the car. As I would follow on in the bus, he said he'd take my bags. i told him it was the migros bags under my coat hanging on the coat rack.

Well got back home on the last bus of the afternoon (it was a Saturday) and started delving in the fridge for the stuff I had bought ..imagine my surprise when I discovered 2 nice steaks, some fancy mushrooms, fresh cream and spatzli - because I hadn't bought any of that. Turns out OH had picked up 3 bags - because they were all hanging on the same peg.

The hairdresser was shut until Tuesday - so we felt obliged to consume the steak. I went back in on Tuesday to tell them and leave my name and address so I could pay the person for their shopping but no one ever contacted me.

Perhaps it was a mistake??? Hope your shopping was yummy ..

Re: Someone stole my shopping!

OP I'm sorry to hear this and hope it was just a mistake. Maybe I live on a different planet, but around here people take their bags from one store into the next all the time without problems.

You keep your receipt in the bag with the items, and if it's just one bag you hang it on the little hook by the trolley handle. If it's a large item or several bags, you put them in the bottom of the cart. If you buy water or TP or whatever, you can ask the store clerk to put a store sticker on it so that when you go into the next shop they know where it came from and that it was already paid for. If an employee asks to see your stuff and your receipt, you hand it over. Simples.

Thanks for your reply! I'd like to think it WAS a mistake, but I find it hard to imagine how someone could make a mistake when the the bags were quite distinctive (one was red with white dots, and the other was red with flowers). I know I probably seem stupid for leaving two brightly coloured bags like that, it's just that I've always done it here and had no problems at all. It was always like that when I was a kid and spent a lot of time here. People were trusting and people were honest. In the little old style villages I still hang on to that image of honest and trustworthy people. Maybe I'm getting old!

Oh, by the way, yes the stuff stolen was yummy; one of the items was a birthday cake for my friend - a Kirschtorte that cost quite a sum. Luckily, I managed to get her a replacement today! It was the last one they had left, so I was lucky!

Romanian larcenists for sure . Switzerland used to be a very safe country before the fall of the Iron Curtain. Our country is full of Eastern European criminals. Same thing in Germany, UK, France, Italy...

Sorry for your loss!

"For sure"?

Since you witnessed this crime, may I please urge you to go to the police as soon as possible. The Kirschtorte has been replaced but justice should still be done.

must be because i'm "latin" but i never heard of people leaving bags around in supermarkets. Btw gypsies today can travel some distance to find greener pastures, there are no safe areas anymore i suppose.

Same thing happened to us in Basel, in Migros Claraplatz. The staff shrugged their shoulders and said it happens quite often.

Dear OP,

Next time, ask if you can place your bags behind the info desk or next to one of the cashiers. Staff are usually quite helpful this way.

Re: Someone stole my shopping!

If one doesn't want to lose anything, just don't leave it in an exposed areas and take a risk. Waxing on how safe it used to be when nobody had access to it makes little sense...so many people tell me they never used to lock their apartments or cars but I bet my shoes they are smart enough to protect their property now.

Adjustment skills are intelligent skills. Let's be smarter in our adjustments than thieves are, not give them the tempting chance at least.

OP - I hope the food they stole tastes as bad as the act they committed, and you are able to enjoy your new tarte. X

Re: Someone stole my shopping!

Northern Switzerland is notorious for its shopping snatchers, or "Bootysnätchers" as they're commonly known.

Disguised as old ladies, they prowl supermarkets looking for delicious victuals to lift while their unsuspecting victims go about their honest, innocent business.

Funnily enough, unlike all the rest of the criminals, who usually come from Rumania and other awful countries, these ones tend to be British - members of a little known tribe of Lancastrians who go by the name of Robson.

This is Mildred Robson, finally captured after a string of outrageous heists in Walmarts in the South West of the United States.

The Robsons rarely make it to the rest of Switzerland as they are terrified of purple spiky hair, pursed lips and grout.

Be warned! And stop worrying about Rumanians. They're too busy burgling your house while you're out shopping to worry about a few paper bags.

True!
I'd advise Girlexotica to check out her lingerie...! Guys, if you must know, she's very, very naughty....
Even I blushed when I got my dirty little finger on some of her underpants... (I didn't take all of them, I have some morals, me)
