Are all the people in the migration office cocky and rude?

I thought that I either vent here or explode. Regardless of what I have been through dealing with Migrationsamt, today they really pissed me off and I really don't think I said something wrong when I was there. Here is the storey:
There is a sort of a conformation paper that unfortunately I need form Migrationsamt in Zurich and since that it takes me an hour to get there I thought I should call first to ask about the cost of that paper and also if I need to bring something (just in case because I have been through a lot with them). However, they told me that I can just come there and pay a certain amount of money and I will get it. So I get there, I say "gruezi" to the man who is supposed to help me then he just looks at me in a creepy way. Anyways I tell him about what I need then he spends like 5 min staring at his computer afterwards he says "well write what you need and send it to us by mail" I was like what? really? then I tell him in really normal tone (not aggressive or anything) I called this morning and the lady on the phone told me to come here with the money and I can get what I need like no problem, then why now do you need a letter? then he latterly says "well the lady asks you to come here so that I tell you that this should be requested by a letter. This is how it works" the tone was very cocky, rude I don't know what to call that but what I know is that I was very provoked by him so I jest stepped back and left.

What you guys think? was that guy rude or was it just me? considering that I called them before just to avoid coming all the way there for nothing and sadly that what happened in the end.

Re: Are all the people in the migration office cocky and rude?

When someone works in an office and is employed by the state he is very likely to act like an absolute dickhead.

That's pretty much universal.

Sorry about your bad experience. If I were you, I'd spend the evening devising elaborate revenge fantasies, go to bed then forget all about it.

Who'd be so evil as to name their child that?

Mind, I went to school with a Twatbastard McFookwit, so who knows?

Next time, ask him for a piece of paper, an envelope and something to write with. Then write the letter, hand it to him and stare at him expectantly.

Of course, there never is a next time.

You say you talked to a lady when you called. Next time, get her name, and ask for her when you get to the office.

transeuropeancheese has made some interesting contributions
Re: Are all the people in the migration office cocky and rude?

For what it's worth:

1. This kind of problem is normally limited to the migrationsamt. Every other administrative office I have dealt with in Switzerland has been polite and helpful (Gemeinde, Betriebungsamt, Zivilstandsamt etc.). It has been well-known for a long time that the Zurich migrationsamt is a pile of shit (putting it mildly). Please don't let this color any other interactions in Switzerland.

2. The people at the migrationsamt on the "front desk" who interact directly with customers do really not have brain cells. The people one level "behind" them, who make the decisions, are brighter. If you somehow manage to communicate directly with those guys you can make progress. I have had sucess with email.

Re: Are all the people in the migration office cocky and rude?

We had a similar experience at the Contrôle des Autos in La Chaux-de-Fonds when we had to register our car. We phoned and were told exactly which papers to bring- we drove the 40 mins there- queued for ages, and were then told we had the correct paper work, and should come back and gave us an appointment for a few days later. The first visit was just to check we had everything we needed. I was furious but remained calm and explained we didn't live locally but had to make a long trip there and back. Her reply :well, you can do some shopping then! I nearly punched her- and explained that we did have shops where we live, thank you.

She apologised and said they always check the paper work is correct before giving an appointment for the final registration, as they waste so much time seeing people who do not have what is required, despite a very clear list given- so they changed the procedure. Hey ho- we laughed in the end- and returned as asked. Nought you can do.

I realize that times change and all... and each window comes with a different clerk... but I am yet to have an unpleasant experience with M-Amt at Berninastrasse, even back in the time when my German was nonexistent. But I'm a sweet looking gal with a shy smile.
