wow day in basel

I arrived in Basel yesterday, have been staying with relatives in a sleepy town in Solothurn for a month so I am definitely feeling like I'm in a city for the first time.
At 11am I was at the Marktplatz when there was an announcement made that I didn't understand, helicopter flew overhead, police came down the street, buses and trams stopped moving and a whole lot of people walking away from the Rhein, and it was quite scary - I found out afterwards that a bus and tram collided at Schifflände, the helicopter and police must have been coincidental and the people obviously were getting off the involved vehicles?

Then in Lidl I got approached by a guy, seemed to be under the influence of something, who got angry when myself and the girl behind me couldn't say what day something was going on sale?

Then in the afternoon, walking down Freistrasse and a woman on a bike starts screaming that someone took her bag with all her money and I turned and saw a girl running up the street and all these people lunged at her, the woman was still screaming and upset and the thief got caught and the woman got her bag back. I didn't see the rest because I didn't want to be nosey, but at least other people helped out and stopped the girl.

Is Basel usually this intense? Everyone keeps telling me, compared to Sydney or Milano, Basel is a little village..

Edit:
(should not have put wow day as title, nothing to do with a world of warcraft event day i'm planning...)

Thanks for being a weird-shit magnet; that's more random excitement than I've come across in the 5 years I've lived here.

Re: wow day in basel

I think you just got lucky with all that excitement/drama! Basel is generally pretty calm- although there are very regular events throughout the year. Regardless, hope you are enjoying your time here!

Yeah. Sorry about that. I was actually asking what day it was. My therapy is on Tuesdays.

Re: wow day in basel

Usually all the excitement I see is a tram coming from an unexpected place.

Anyone happen to know anything about the 11 tram coming from Volta Center to make a LEFT onto Elsasserstr and head toward France instead of coming straight up Elsasserstr?

Re: wow day in basel

The Tran No.11 makes always a detour to volta center and contiues to St.Louis
Border, when there is a problem at Schifflände (it runs on the track of Tram No.1 to Volta Center from the SBB Station).
The problem could be a parked car (between Johanniterbrücke and University Spital), the road is pretty narrow there.

Seen yesterday the tram No.1 approaching from Elsässerstrasse to the Volta Platz (midday around 13.10 hrs), which is kind of unusal aswell.

When take a good look around you, you will always see funny things here. Weird people, funny clothes, people talking nonsense to you, unexpected things happening... For me Switzerland is a very funny place.

I havent seen anything like that in Basel to be honest in 4 months, apart from the shootings in Kleinbasel before Christmas its pretty quiet imo.

+1 to this except I'm here for 7 years now.
Can you maybe open a topic on EF to inform us of your daily movements so we can avoid to be in the neighborhood?

Re: wow day in basel

been here a total of 4 weeks over the last 3.5 months and I have yet to see anything weird although I'm probably the weird one as I don't speak any German and grocery shopping is always an adventure (especially when they ask you for the price of something at the cash because its not in their system)

It snowed TWICE in Basel today!!!!

That doesn't happen even in Sydney. (Hardly ever in Basel, either.)

Do not be mistaken, Milano (which I like) is a market-town but with a Suburbia of 5 mio.

Basel however has a Long Tradition as a City. It was the largest City in Switzerland (and one of the larger ones in Central Europe, compared with Köln and Strassburg, which in the past was far more important than now) by 1848, it was the first Banking City all round, it had the largest University and the largest Museums all around, it was the first City in Switzerland where People could buy Bluejeans (Zch followed one or two years later, an eternity for 10 to 12 years old boys), Basel was the first City in Switzerland with a Supermarket open on Sundays (COOP accross from Basel-SBB) and Basel was and is central in regard to cargo-truck and cargo-rail links towards seaports. Yes, the Baslers at times appear a bit aloof, a bit arrogant, a bit pompous and self-assuming, and rather weird at times, but if you understand that "Nation" they are perfectly alright
