French supermarkets near Geneva Airport

Hi. I've just bought a holiday home in Vaud and we only have a fairly small Migros in our village. I usually hire a car from the Swiss side at Geneva Airport each time I go and was wondering whether it's worth driving into France to stock up at a French supermarket. Any suggestions would be gratefully received.

Ferney Voltaire has a nice Casino supermarket, about 5min away from the airport. I go there quite regularly.

Its actually a Carrefour, but I doubt many that go there would describe it as "nice" , although it is the biggest supermarket in the area!

LeClercs which is less than 5 minutes drive from it is a far nicer store.

It's certainly a much bigger store but personally I wouldn't say it's much nicer, they're both about the same IMO but there is more choice in LeClerc.

E.leclerc is better. Heard a lot of overcharging in carrefour. They also have better meat products and stuff.

LeClercs has recently been expanded and refurbished, and at least resembles a half decent supermarket

Carrefour in Ferney is filthy, it smells and the staff are obnoxious, if you go midweek the sheves are half empty! The Segney store is a bit better.

Don't forget of course your limits for customs import from French-side. 300 Swiss francs max per person, and 1kg of meat, 5 litre of wine and 1 litre of spirits (etc).

If you are going to Vaud, you might find it easier to shop in Divonne les Bains, the town in France is very close to the Autobahn exit at Coppet, http://supermarches.grandes-enseigne...-les-bains.php

If you can afford a holiday home.......

Don't forge the time aspect also, time does have a value and by driving from Geneva to France, buying whatever, driving back clearing customs, it culd easily take 2-3 hours.

Is it really worth it to save GBP 50.--?

I must admit I haven't been to LeClerc since it was renovated but beforehand it pretty much fitted your description if the Carrefour. It was filthy too and on more than one occasion I saw mice scuttling under the shelves in the dried food section which rather put us off going back there.

We generally only shop over there if we're going to meet friends who live in France and have taken to using the newly renovated Intermarche in St Genis as it's quite nice and they have a fairly large British food section. It is quite a bit further over the border though.

She never said she wanted to save money……… just that they only had a very small Migros, she may just be looking for more choice.

Between Geneva airport and Villars there is a lot more than "a small Migros"

Lets start with Coop at the highway exit of Allamen and one at Villeneuve

(She lists her location as Villars) meaing you would need to come of the highway at Aigles, also a place with a sodding great Migros)

Are you sure it's in Ferney? I have never seen a Casino there
There is a Casino (grocery) in Divonne not far from the...casino (gambling). Easy access from A1, coming from GVA airport/le Vengeron jct, take the first exit (Coppet), turn left and follow signs to Divonne.

Indeed, both Carrefour (used to be Champion before Carrefour took it over) and Lidl in Ferney are filthy beyond belief. Carrefour in Ségny (toward Gex) is okay. Leclerc improved after renovation works.

Also there is a huge Migros MMM in Thoiry (01/France) - nobody mentioned it . CC Val Thoiry mall is very popular among Genevans, it's the best in Pays de Gex. From Ferney drive south direction Bourg/Bellegarde/Technoparc, take Thoiry exit and bear right.

Re: French supermarkets near Geneva Airport

There's a brand new Carrefour in Divonne (turn left right after the border and go for about 1 km till you get there.
Otherwise I would go for the MMM in Thoiry. The supermarkets in Ferney have always disappointed me.

Carrefour in Divonne is good, also open on Sunday mornings, although a lot of products will not be available anymore as they don't seem to refill the shelves overnight

I would second that .. Forget France or any messing about near the airport, go straight on the highway and head for Villars, third of the way there exit highway at Allaman. You can see the large COOP from the highway exit.
