Re: Swiss Education system

If they are university bound, Gymnasium. If technical or professional, could be WBS E-Zug or WBS P-Zug in Basel Stadt. There is some variation by canton, but there have been recent efforts to standardize the model somewhat across the cantons.

Some good sites:

I live in basel so this is Basel specific, probably could search for similar sites for other cantons..

some dated information on this one, but gives a good basic feel for how Swiss education works.

Re: Swiss Education system

A lot has already been written in this Forum about the Swiss education system. See, for example, Swiss School System and other fixed threads (called "sticky") in the part of English Forum called "Education".

Re: Swiss Education system

There's no high school like in the US, UK and many other countries. There's also no college in that same sense.

There are three routes after primary school, and only the 'highest' one (Gymnasium) - which lasts much longer than the others - will give a student the possibility to directly go to university.

The others are the entry ticket to apprenticeships, i.e. vocational training (both practical and theoretical learning) which lead to a specific profession. Via a detour of additional qualifications and/or several years of work experience, it is possible to enter a university of applied sciences or other schools. Note that universities and universities of applied sciences are not the same, though most don't fully realize that.

Diplommittelschule doesn't exist anymore in that sense and has been replaced by Fachmittelschulen. Fachmittelschulen are an alternative to vocational training, to a certain extent. It can be completed with an FMS-Diploma or a Fachmaturität (which takes one additional year to obtain). Neither allows for entry to universities (such as Uni of Zurich/Basel/Bern/St Gallen/etc, ETH/EPFL etc), but if completed with a Fachmaturität, it may be an entry to to some universities of applied sciences, though not all.

Note that apprenticeships are by far the most popular option, with approx. 70-80% of the population going that route. The educational system in Switzerland is high quality, vocational training and education are perfectly sufficient for most professions while they would or at least might require a degree of some sort in other countries (usually because in other countries, it's either a degree or nothing at all, with no options in between).

1) means that you are allowed to attend University
2/ this is just a college level
ETH is what the Germans call a TECHNISCHE UNIVERSITAET and not a college

This is not correct, a Fachmaturität is not the same as a gym. Maturität and only the latter allows for (direct) university entrance.

ETH is the equivalent of a US Engineering school (MIT, CalTech, Etc.)
