Donating a bike to developing countries

Does anyone know the name of the charity that were outside Basel Messe a couple of years ago, at Art Basel or MUBA, I don't remember which, who were collecting bikes to send to developing countries. Google has not been my friend so far

Re: Donating a bike to developing countries

We had a guy in Bülach asking for bikes for him to donate to Africa.

I had the horrors, because he was going to give these bikes to African school children - who travel vast distances to their schools.

This person obviously has no idea - never seen what travel/road conditions are in Africa!
Those kids are going to kill themselves, be killed by passing traffic, or simply have their bikes hi-jacked.

No-one in a sane frame of mind attempts to ride a bicycle in Africa, although there are a few insane/brave folk who attempt it occasionally.

The roads are not safe for pedestrians (hoards walk to work and back daily, and are regularly made mince meat of by passing traffic), never mind a bike rider who`ll simply be side-swiped!

I know several people who have ridden from Germany to Cape Town, and never had any problems...

Calm down? I don't see where you're coming from with that...

Sure, they had flat tires and such. Changed out some components now and then. My brother got attacked by a swarm of 'killer' bees. Almost got stampeded by a herd of wild elephants...But they never got hit by cars or felt that it was dangerous to ride on the road.(well, it's dangerous to ride on a busy highway in any country or on any continent, true.)

Nothing like when we were cycle touring here in CH, and several 'red-neck' type local guys in Lötschtal decided to throw large fire-crackers at us in the middle of the night while camping...

In fact, nothing like that had ever happened to any of us, with over 13 years on the road in over 60 countries between the 3 of us...

My mate Roger tried that. He set off from Munich one sunny day in May, all full of optimism. Everything was hunky dory until he got to Trieste, where he rode off the edge of the harbour and was never seen again.

Good. I`m glad to hear something blew your mind.

Try visiting Africa sometime.

One of the last "civilized" African countries is South Africa, and one cannot even walk safely on a pavement there anymore.

Edit addition: Iit is good that the folk of Europe donate as many bicycles as possible.

Re: Donating a bike to developing countries

After buying new bikes recently, we were also asked to donate our old bikes to be sent to Africa.

With all the problems the people of Africa face I think the safety when using a bicycle are the least of their worries...

Apparently they're safer to ride if you're circumcised or something...

Thanks 3Wishes, I think it was the group Prof Taratonga gave, who were simply called Bikes for Africa before they became Velafrika.

As it's not completely off topic here are a couple of guys who are in the middle of a bike ride from London to Cape Town right now:

They are gladly accepting donations for Save The Rhino charity!
