Re: What you doing for valentines day?

I'm wondering about the relevance of the cutlery supplied - two knives.

Is that in case things don't go well - or for the married people?

Re: What you doing for valentines day?

I am not doing anything as I do not believe in this useless celebration from the USA.
You don't need a specific day - 14th of February- to show your love and have a special dinner or get presents or something. It is like faking your love for one day just because it is Valentine's day.
I can have a Valentine's day every day with my husband , it doesn't have to be THAT specific day. So, I am not doing anything.
He will cook for me and make a dessert just as he has the pleasure to cook for me every day. Oh and he brings me presents, chocolate and flowers every week because I am his wife and not because of Valentine's Day.

Re: What you doing for valentines day?

Think of all the half-price roses to buy on Monday the 16th or just shortly before closing on Saturday.

Personally, of all the things I miss from the UK this time of year, the abundance of (affordable) daffodils and narcissi is top of my list

Another take of valentine's day. Of course, these things you could also do at the other days as well...

I'm going my daughter's school to help decorate and supervise at a disco/party the older students (15-16) are putting on for the younger students.

I'll stop at McDonalds on the way home for a coffee and hopefully be offered one of those little sweet nothing biscuits in the Café, then once home watch another episode of Grantchester Mysteries and final moments of the next round of Melodifestivalen (really cheesy Swedish run-up to Eurovision).

Shoukd I ask OH what he has planned?

Several years ago (long before iPhones), a friend and I (let's call him Dan) had an almost surreal experience. Dan travels everywhere by car, and I speak so highly of the public transport. It's an ongoing topic in our friendship.

On this particular evening, as we were setting out to... McDonalds, for want of inspiration, I persuaded Dan to go by tram and bus. Fair enough. I was convinced I could do it. But instead of elegantly piloting Dan into any one of the McDonalds I could easily have found in the city, I followed Dan's suggestion of a branch across the City border, which, in public transport terms means in another town and zone. Oh, dear. I messed it up and we ended up walking and walking through a cold and dark industrial area until we finally found the shops and McDonalds.

As we reached to open the door, a young woman dressed in a tuxedo opened it, and greeted us warmly, asking us to follow her to our table. Table? Follow her? We did, and went into a back area, a kind of winter-garden, which had been transformed beyond recognition. Proper chairs and tables, with white starched linen tablecloths and serviettes! The ceiling was convered in a midnight blue cloth, punctured with tiny holes which allowed a gentle light to come through, so it all looked like stars in the heavens. There were tall pedistals with huge flower arrangements, and yes, cultery. Our chairs were pulled back for us, and our jackets taken and hung up on the coatrack. We were brought leather-bound menus, showing all the usual items, plus prawn cocktail.

Dan and I both ordered prawn cocktail, feeling dazed and confused. It was brought to us on china plates, and on each plate a real St Jaques shell, in which the prawn cocktail was arranged, garnished with iceberg lettuce. As the waitress gently set the plates on the table, she beamed and said: "Happy Valentine's Day!"

Dan and I stared at each other, schocked. We both know that this is not the nature of our friendship! Dan asked: "Did you know this was here, and that's why you took me through that weird walkway past the dark factories, for maximum surprise effect?" "No," I replied: "I just got all the bus routes mixed up, that's all. I knew nothing of this." And then I asked: "Well, did you know? It was you who wanted to come to this particular branch of McDonalds!" "Oh, no!" said Dann, "I didn't think anything at all about that. I need to know: Is this a date?"

We were both horrified, and it took a few more reassuranced until we both figured out that we had entirely forgotten that it was Valentine's Day. And that no, truly, neither of us was interested in diversifying our friendship.

That being established, we relaxed and enjoyed being served our BigMacs under silver serving domes, laughing at the weirdness of all those unexpected trappings.

Recently, Dan and his daughter told me that he still has the shell from that evening, so he knows it did happen. And I have mine, too, on my bookshelf. I remember asking the young tuxedo woman, then, if we could please take them home, so we'd later have proof that the dreamy evening had been within McDonalds' reality.

That is an amazing story! I loved it. You created the atmosphere, and I enjoyed reading it.
I take it you and Dan go onto another level in your relationship? (With a bit of help from your friendly McDonalds)

Re: What you doing for valentines day?

picking up GF in train in Lausanne in the morning, doing together skitour to Pic Chaussy, enjoying very nice thermal baths hidden in the alps (although probably not hidden enough), moving on to Martigny accomodation with some dinner somewhere, giving her few presents (some earrings she showed interest in and invitation on Mont Blanc skitour in may, with guide). Next day heading to France for another skitour, probably around Vallorcine...
Not that having saturday a Valentine's day changes anything compared to other weekends, except for those gifts of course

At least no one has said anything about watching that BDSM movie. I'm just sick of reading about it all over the news...
That domestic abuse movie that the BDSM community would like to separate itself from you mean!

We have no plans. We can be valentinesyish, but we prefer to do it when everyone else isn't

My OH thinks I am sometimes soooooo unromantic because I tell him to get me chocolates and flowers...after they go 50% off.

As for Valentine's Day itself, nothing special planned. I might bake some heart-shaped muffins.

I sense that this approach only works for women. If I carted out this line, I'm pretty sure I'd be sleeping on the couch.

Alone.

Re: What you doing for valentines day?

Every day is Valentine's day over here! Every day I open my eyes, look at the Mr., and think I am so lucky to have him in my life!

On a serious note, forget Valentine's, it's Carnival!!!!
We are going to a Carnival costume party at the Italian House here in the District - i.e. we'll eat too much, party too hard, and be slightly tipsy* by Sunday morning. Sounds like a great (Valentine's day) plan to me.
