Shouldn't the McDonalds poster be showing a Filet-o'-Fish, instead, as it's Valentine's Day?

We're off for a dirty weekend in Gengenbach, and will look at 50 shades of white. And since when did McDonalds start using cutlery?

And since when did McDonalds start using cutlery?

Several years ago (long before iPhones), a friend and I (let's call him Dan) had an almost surreal experience. Dan travels everywhere by car, and I speak so highly of the public transport. It's an ongoing topic in our friendship.

On this particular evening, as we were setting out to... McDonalds, for want of inspiration, I persuaded Dan to go by tram and bus. Fair enough. I was convinced I could do it. But instead of elegantly piloting Dan into any one of the McDonalds I could easily have found in the city, I followed Dan's suggestion of a branch across the City border, which, in public transport terms means in another town and zone. Oh, dear. I messed it up and we ended up walking and walking through a cold and dark industrial area until we finally found the shops and McDonalds.

As we reached to open the door, a young woman dressed in a tuxedo opened it, and greeted us warmly, asking us to follow her to our table. Table? Follow her? We did, and went into a back area, a kind of winter-garden, which had been transformed beyond recognition. Proper chairs and tables, with white starched linen tablecloths and serviettes! The ceiling was convered in a midnight blue cloth, punctured with tiny holes which allowed a gentle light to come through, so it all looked like stars in the heavens. There were tall pedistals with huge flower arrangements, and yes, cultery. Our chairs were pulled back for us, and our jackets taken and hung up on the coatrack. We were brought leather-bound menus, showing all the usual items, plus prawn cocktail.

Dan and I both ordered prawn cocktail, feeling dazed and confused. It was brought to us on china plates, and on each plate a real St Jaques shell, in which the prawn cocktail was arranged, garnished with iceberg lettuce. As the waitress gently set the plates on the table, she beamed and said: "Happy Valentine's Day!"

Dan and I stared at each other, schocked. We both know that this is not the nature of our friendship! Dan asked: "Did you know this was here, and that's why you took me through that weird walkway past the dark factories, for maximum surprise effect?" "No," I replied: "I just got all the bus routes mixed up, that's all. I knew nothing of this." And then I asked: "Well, did you know? It was you who wanted to come to this particular branch of McDonalds!" "Oh, no!" said Dann, "I didn't think anything at all about that. I need to know: Is this a date?"

We were both horrified, and it took a few more reassuranced until we both figured out that we had entirely forgotten that it was Valentine's Day. And that no, truly, neither of us was interested in diversifying our friendship.

That being established, we relaxed and enjoyed being served our BigMacs under silver serving domes, laughing at the weirdness of all those unexpected trappings.

Recently, Dan and his daughter told me that he still has the shell from that evening, so he knows it did happen. And I have mine, too, on my bookshelf. I remember asking the young tuxedo woman, then, if we could please take them home, so we'd later have proof that the dreamy evening had been within McDonalds' reality.

Re: What you doing for valentines day?

Doropfiz, was this in Switzerland?

McDonalds in my US hometown used to do this every year, in cooperation with some local church group. The church provided all the flowers, decorations and even the wait staff would be people from the church. McDonalds employees just had to stay behind the counter and ring up the orders as the 'waiter' brought them.

It was seen as a good place for church teens to take their girlfriends as it was classy but still (a) affordable, (b) familiar, (c) teetotal.

The most common alternative was a catered dinner in the church hall.

Sure, you could branch out and go somewhere else on your own (if you could afford it, but not many teens could, and it was a pride thing not to let your parents bankroll that particular evening) but doing so was greeted with mild suspicion. Just what were you planning to get up to that you were so desperate to get away from others - hold hands under the table??

Different planet, many fond memories

Re: What you doing for valentines day?

I'm going my daughter's school to help decorate and supervise at a disco/party the older students (15-16) are putting on for the younger students.

I'll stop at McDonalds on the way home for a coffee and hopefully be offered one of those little sweet nothing biscuits in the Café, then once home watch another episode of Grantchester Mysteries and final moments of the next round of Melodifestivalen (really cheesy Swedish run-up to Eurovision).

Shoukd I ask OH what he has planned?

Yes, Switzerland. Both of us had already lived here for many years, and neither had ever heard of this! And.... we've never found it again, although that might be to do with the fact that we both keep waking up in March or April saying: "Did we miss trying to find Valentine's Day in McDonalds, agaaaiin?"

Thanks, MathNut, for sharing your memories, too. Sounds lovely, and sweet, and safe, and dignified.
