Moving from to Zurich from Canada

GrŁezi!

My wife and I are relocating to Zurich in March, for a (hopefully) long-ish term assignment (2-3yrs.).

As part of my relocation package from work, a shipment of our stuff (500lbs) is included. We didn't think we'd be taking any furniture/dishes... but maybe we should? What would you recommend shipping over to Switzerland? (apart from the obvious clothes, books, etc.)

Perhaps something that is lacking in quality (on this forum I read that mattresses are apparently horrible in Switzerland)? Or perhaps something that is very expensive to buy in Switzerland (like a bike)? Maybe something you wish you would have brought/shipped?

Any other advice would of course be appreciated as well.

Thank you,
Mylo

Oops. It should read:

"Perhaps something that is lacking in quality in Switzerland (on this forum I read that mattresses are apparently horrible in Switzerland)?"

Re: Moving from to Zurich from Canada

We (from Australia) bought mattresses in Zurich and have been very happy with them - both with our high end mattress and the Ikea ones for our daughter. There are many companies and models to choose from. Only thing - if you buy Swiss mattresses, consider buying Swiss sheets as the ones from home may not fit.

Happy moving!

Hi Mylo

Good luck with the move.

I think it's fair to say that most things in Switzerland are expensive but therefore of a very good quality (including mattresses!)

Re: Moving from to Zurich from Canada

Thanks, everyone.

I'm sure the mattresses are great in Switzerland! I was jokingly referencing a recent thread on this forum

I was more asking about general advice when it comes to immigration and shipment of stuff. What to take, what not to take...

For ex.:
Furniture
We thought to rent a furnished apartment, therefore not to ship furniture and kitchen-ware. Is renting a furnished apartment a feasible option, btw? Searching on homegate does not produce too many results in our price range (~CFH2200).

Bike
I am planning to have a bike as my main mode of transportation to and from work. At first I thought to buy a bike in Zurich, but now I am considering to buy one in Canada and ship it (as the shipping is covered by the company).

Thanks again, everyone!

Re: Moving from to Zurich from Canada

It is not only quality, but also price. In Switzerland, a mattress with springs (I want springs in my mattress; full stop) costs like CHF 5000 for a decent quality.
For kids, the same mattress is CHF 200.

Either, there's an issue in this equation, or I don't know where to buy a mattress in here (both of them are possible btw).

You could look at subrenting an apartment. You are unlikely to find something for 2-3 years straight but often Swiss people will rent their apartments out for months or 12 months at a time while going travelling/on temporary work assignments. This would save you paying to furnish a full place and you'd also get to experience different parts of the city. Only downside is having to move.

Re: Moving from to Zurich from Canada

Moved from North America via Italy and found it easiest to just take everything in suitcases after a rather intense 'purge' of 'stuff'.

Considering the costs to move in/out, cleaning fees, etc so far I've found it easier to rent a furnished place until I find a place worth moving into.

Two years goes by pretty quick
