Are you going away then? If not- get back there on Monday and explain what happened, and backdate registration if necessary to keep within the law. Different here of course in rural area- but they are very friendly here and will just laugh it off- not if you are weeks or months behind though.
Not sure who you're replying to in this post but if it's the OP one would hope that he'd got it sorted by now.

Since the topic is implicitly about registration at gemeind without queue up, I have a question: is it possible to arrange an appointment (for residence permit procedure) in advance at the gemeinde (by phone or by email) in order to avoid the queue?
Call and ask.

YES - surely, here, there or anywhere- things are different from office to office, area to area- so how can anyone here reply anything else...

and ooops, I have to say I do not always have to check posting date ...

I was 3 or 6 months late, obviously I don't remember, but the fine was around 45 francs or so in Bern but the woman waived it for me.
25 Stutz when I forgot to change my address with the Einwohnerkontrolle, in ZH. As with you it was waved.

Re: What happens if you fail to register at gemeinde?

When we moved BS -> ZH our rental contract came into effect 1 month before we actually moved. This triggered an invitation to register at the council office in Kreis 9 - which would have been impossible on the date stated as MrsNick was still working in Basel and would have been a major faff ffor her to get the day off work and drag Nickatbasel Jnr out of daycare.

A quick phonecall and they happily postponed until a few weeks later when we had actually moved in.

The amusing part was we had to ALL go along in person to register including Nickatbasel Jnr who was just 3 at the time - and we DID say are you sure you want our 3 year old too? When we got there the same bint who was behind the counter had a barney about him being restless and not sitting still. To which my response was, "WE TOLD YOU SO!".

You know it takes at least a year for these things to catch up with you...

Re: What happens if you fail to register at gemeinde?

If you don't register you cannot pay local tax and you'll continue paying in your old commune. Once you do register you'll have to pay back taxes to your new commune, then try to get the taxes paid back from your old commune.

The theory works fine, in practice, getting money out of the the tax office is not so easy.

One hour wasted in the queue today and had to leave. May not be able to register on time now. What are the consequences of non-/late- registration?
I've had a few overlapping leases and gave them the actual day i moved in, which was after the start date usually. I've never been fined.
