Leysin: now vs then back in early 80s?

I attended hockey camp there w/ a group of guys from US & Canada, back in 1981, & had a great time. Anyone remember the name of the (back then) bar that had wooden booths (of which I totally passed out in, I may add, hehee) & the pitchers of great beer -- that I went nuts drinking, haha, back then?

We had such a good few wks there that I still remember this trip, & was wondering if anyone was around during that time -- that may remember the good old days?

Thanks for any input here. I sure hope someday I can return to visit Switzerland, as I have never visited anywhere I enjoyed more than there.

Re: Leyin: now vs then back in early 80s?

The Vagabond Club? (the Vag) My gf was working as night nurse next door at Clinique St. Agnes. I was taking care of the pool at the Hotel Central. There was an expat running the Restaurant Prafandaz, nice walk out past the Vag. Good walks in the summer to the Tour d'Ai and the Tour de Mayen. Don't know if I'd recognize the place now.

Re: Leyin: now vs then back in early 80s?

Yes, I suppose it was the famous Vagabond Club - was very famous with Brits then, and a regular base camp for Chris Bonham and other famous British climbers on the alte 60s and 70s.

The walk along the Tour D'Aï is a favourite in Summer, as you can see the Alps on one side and the Romandie plain and lakes the other side. There is now a revolving restaurant at the top of the Leysins cable-car and a Via Ferrata all along the Tour d'Aï. That rock looks amazing morning and night from the other side at Torgon- a big Mohican which turns orange-pink as the sun hits it.

Later edit - doh, yes Bonnington. I blame old age Got a fab present for my BD, his terrible cold he's been dragging for weeks so firmly stuck indoors. Thanks. But he did feed me- as he should, according to the Beatles!

I think you probably mean Chris Bonnington.

What are you doing in here anyway? You should be out getting pampered and enjoying the sunshine.

BTW, you're kitten photo/avatar is beautiful!

Ok, well this was a bar that was walking distance (past flower-box homes, etc.) from our Hotel overlooking, I think, the open-aired ice rink we used to walk to daily down to from the hotel.

I remember the streets there are very narrow & no one had a car w/ us younger players -- only the 2 pro NHL hockey players had THE lone car, haha.

But we had fun, met girls from all over the world touring (w/ their colleges throughout Europe on "holiday") & had 3 Irish girls -- one named Shibon (sp?) -- as maids that summer of '81 in the Hotel (which looked like a ski lodge/chalet, as I recall, as my mind gets vague on some details).

Ok, does this sound like the Vag Club then? What was the Hotel called w/ about 3-5 levels & wooden-like balconies overhanging/looking the street below?

There was some kind of old workout room/gym down the lane walking dist from Hotel, where we lifted some weights too, I think. I remember we used to run around before ice practice to warmup, through the area/streets around the ice rink, before going onto the ice to practice.

I would love to know where I actually stayed during that blur of a summer! Hahaa

Re: Leysin: now vs then back in early 80s?

Leysin at the time was pretty strung out, the Vag being here 46.3436644,7.0047767 and the Centre Sportif at 46.34189,7.0155327 (satellite view at maps.google.com.) It would have been a bit of a walk from there. Did you ever frequent the english cinema? Older lady ran the place and would sometimes get the order of the reels of film mixed up. Some of the entrepreneurial expats would pop up huge bags of popcorn and sell it in the theater. I only visited the ice rink once. Rented some skates that were three sizes too small. I still can't uncurl my toes... (Are you reading this, Tricia?) Funny, I got there in June of '82 and stayed three years. Just missed you!

Thx for this info. Funny I missed you by 1 yr exactly. lol

Hmm, this gets foggy in my head being that age & back this long ago.

I know the club/bar (it really seemed from my recall, to be an English-style pub, I think. At that age & coming from the modern '80s US, it seemed like we went back to the middle ages, haha, as far as seeing that old of architecture, etc. in those very narrow streets filled w/ window flower boxes, etc. I still think back & wonder if that was the 1500 or 1600's that I went to that summer, hahaha) had old wooden booths, as at 21 yrs old, too many beers had me passing out in one, haha.

Then I recall we were walking outside & had rocks/cement walls to sit at, on the street nearby, I think. This was to continue babbling/drinking/partying -- much to the chagrin I'm sure, of the folks who lived there.

Wow, I don't even know the Hotel's name that we stayed at, so does anyone know that one?

Re: Leysin: now vs then back in early 80s?

Well sorry if I'm replying to my own thread here but I'm wondering if anyone else was in Leysin in early '80s, & thought maybe this thread was falling too far down to be seen. But anyway thanks so far for a ton of good info re those times & fond memories, that I have of back then w/ my 1st (& only since) trip to Switzerland. We flew into into Geneva & took a bus to Leysin for the time we spent there that summer of '81.

Re: Leysin: now vs then back in early 80s?

@Swissvino

I can't help with your specific question since I didn't live/ski in Leysin in the '80s but on this page (about half way down) you will see a couple of photos of the outside of the hostel+bar - Club Vagabond

http://clubvagabondleysin.blogspot.ch/

There is also a FaceBook page for the hotel/club. You might find something there or you could ask a question.

https://www.facebook.com/groups/clubvagabond/

EDIT: there is a film about the hostel/bar on FB. You might be able to see if it was the place or not. http://allenhill1.flavors.me/#vagabond-club-documentary

Thanks for this! I briefly looked so far but Vagabond Club looks much larger than the tiny pub we sat in, unless it was the entrance part & we never got further into the club?? Hmm, have no clue but maybe.

Also, the rink looks SOOO familiar as the picture posted is of 1982 & thus one summer after me being there too. We used to run warmups in mornings up & down through the town & hills, & I recall very steep hills & we were then tired -- BEFORE hitting the ice all day to play or practice.

Ok, I will overlook this all. Again thank you for this info.

Yes well, I was just looking at this thread again & saw where the word Vag was used, haha.

Then I just assumed it was colloquial but it is hilarious if you take a second to realize it.

Re: Leysin: now vs then back in early 80s?

Hi, not sure about the Leysin in the 80s but I lived there a few years back. I think the vagabond club is no longer there. There's a small pub that we used to frequent called Top Pub (not sure if this one that you went to). It has wooden railings in front and a pool table inside. It's just like 2 min walk from the train station.
