Re: Why do so many people in Zurich smoke?

Smoking is an essential part of CH economics and as such it must be one of the most "free" countries in Europe in terms of advertising ( where else can you still advertise in cinemas ?) , places to smoke eg train stations, many sports stadiums are classed as OK and second hand smoke is just something I should not have enjoy : very few people deal with my second hand Shiraz..

but back to the economic argument
Taxes are raised on sales of cigarettes : hence they are priced relatively low to disposable income in this country

illness caused by smoking cause no pain to tax payments as system is predominantly privately funded : much of this money goes into people employed in system who pay taxes, or to big pharma who pay some taxes, and in infrastructure costs which employ more people . Bad news is non smokers here pay an unfair contribution here but not to detriment of government/kanton/gemeinde finance

people die early meaning pension expenditure is controlled : I mean in a country obsessed with outdoor life and so many pensioners still speed climbing the Eiger : how else do you ensure your population dies at an economically viable age ( this also help keep private pension schemes funded as well as not creating a large government expenditure) and put it down to "choice" : the Logan's Run version is just so un PC

So for all us non smokers out there ... keep going guys but would be nice if you could do it in your own enclosed spaces and perhaps avoid putting too much strain on Krankenkasse

I say this as someone who lost their long smoking grandfather to lung cancer ( 20 years earlier than any of the other grandparents : 2 of which ran a pub for 20 years ...)

Re: Why do so many people in Zurich smoke?

I know you're going to groan at me for this, Tom - and I know you like your cheeky cigaroony now and again but....

...if you're at a tram stop with a series of puffing chimneys even in the open air it can be quite horrible if you're an asthmatic. And trying to stand upwind is not always possible. And to cap it all, they take a massive drag just as the tram arrives, throw the dog end on the pavement and exhale their loveliness over other occupants of the enclosed tram.

I entirely welcomed the various indoor bans that came into force over the last couple of years - I can go for a beer and not arrive home needing a shower to stop smelling like an ashtray. And I don't have to suffer it at my workplace anymore.

Yes, I would favour more restrictions in open air situations - but realistically that is not going to happen so you just work around it.

Cheers,
Nick

It's totally on-topic. You find smoking unpleasant - just as other people find being attacked by labradors or rendered unconscious by branches unpleasant - so move.

Why should the rest of the world change its behaviour to suit your personal preferences?
Then you ask me to change my behaviour to suit YOUR personal preference. That is called hypocrisy :>

The problem is that there is NO smoke-free spot on platforms not to mention bus-stops. Why should I move? Maybe the smoker should move a bit not to influence the well-being of 10 non-smoking persons? My choice is not to smoke but I am unable to do so.

Plenty of pregnant women smoke, as well as women with kids.

I know of quite a few, actually.

Re: Why do so many people in Zurich smoke?

according to the stats on the first page, only 20% of Swiss are smokers. And of those, I am guessing a large percentage are considerate of non-smokers. So it's only about 1% of the whole population that would need to move to a different tram shelter to please non-smokers.

They're allowed to and they want to.

At present there really is only one answer for you.

I see a lot of people, young people, smoking in f.e. Scotland (the only part of the UK I often go to). If this is getting less than probably more due to the high prices of cigarettes rather than that it is uncool? And that drunk driving, don´t come to the Scottish Borders........
I was referring to the civilised bits of the UK, not the occupied zones.

The UK pricing strategy is certainly working, but still, smoking is cool?

Smokers and non-smokers, ne'er the twain shall meet.

In the UK, smoking is fast approaching socially unacceptable for teenagers and younger people, like drunk driving now is.
Why isn't it the case here?
Why are so many youngsters smoking?
Do they think it's cool?
Really? I can't say I noticed that at all on my last visit to the UK back in October.

There were still loads of teenagers and younger people smoking where we were in one of the 'nice' areas of greater London.
There seemed to be just as many people smoking in the UK as there are here as far as we could see.

I spent a day in Manchester recently, and I thought there was a marked difference in the number smokers.

And according to you I don't have the right to STAND and wait while not being suffocated by cancerogenic smoke? Not to mention a pregnant woman or a women with kids....
I was not going to comment on this subject as the groaners come out in their legions.

I don't see why us non smokers have to move out of bus shelters in bad weather because some ill mannered smoker comes and stands right next to us. If they chose to foul the air with their disgusting habit then they should have the decency to stand away from other folk, even if that means standing out of the shelter.

as JakubB I will always move my kids away from smokers even if it means standing in crappy weather, and it doesnt matter how many filthy looks you give in their direction, their ignorant natures mean they just don't get that you find them extremely offensive.

Second hand smoke kills. The first thing my wife notices when arriving in Switzerland is how the HB looks like a giant cloud and is oppressive to breath in. It's an absolutely embarrassing and terrible situation for such an advanced country.

I don't care if you want to kill yourself, but you are contributing to a boatload of other people getting cancer just because they travel by train or bus instead of car. We *must* get public smoking under control.

I'm not interested in comparing statistics about which country kills slightly fewer innocents through second-hand smoke either. This isn't acceptable until people have the decency to stop smoking in public areas, which clearly isn't happening on its own.

Re: Why do so many people in Zurich smoke?

I will always stand outside of the bus shelter when smoking, even if it rains, if only to make sure I do not bother anyone with my smoking. Yes, even smokers can be considerate.
But I do get annoyed if people think that all smokers are inconsiderate

Re: Why do so many people in Zurich smoke?

At a ski resort yesterday there was an area enclosed on three sides where people get funneled into to wait for the next cable car. Once through the doors into this area, you can't go back.

One hundred people are crammed in there. Lots with young children.

There are no-smoking signs everywhere. People still thought it was okay to light up and smoke.

Pretty obnoxious.

To that I agree with you. But then I do not smoke whenever there is a non smoking sign, that is basic common sense for me.

Thats pretty bad and I would imagine dangerous really, what if someone dropped a cigarette? getting all those people out would be mayhem.

Maybe as well as the no smoking signs up they should also have video surveillance, might deter folk from lighting up?

P.S. The one on my balcony is slightly smaller.

Yeah, smoking can of course easily be compared with aggressive labradors and falling branches. Highly, erm, logical.

Smoking in an enclosed place and exposing other people to your smoke is highly inconsiderate at best, downright rude by normal standards. One smoker does not have the right to make ten other people uncomfortable enough to move, regardless of your nonsensical arguments about comparing it to the most random and ridiculous stuff you can think of. It's not illegal for them to do so yet, but they are being an utter **** every time they do something like that.

I don't think people really care. It's a mindset. No one else minded the that the smokers were smoking.

No, the experts on this forum believe the right thing to do is put up and shut up as it's not doing anyone any harm.
