British Consulate in Zurich?

Hello EF's

I need to inform the British System of my permanent residence here. Do I need to go to the British Embassy in Bern or is there a Consulate here in Zurich? Do I need to take anything in particular.

Anyone done the same thing?

Thanks,

Duke

If you are an important person, the Ambassador will rescue you before the Russians get here. I am registered, why aren't you?

If the UK bring a FATCA type tax for non-res then it would be very easy to tax them and send them the good old Self Assessment form with a pre-paid SAE.

I also have not registered with the British embassy. Does anyone know how soon after moving to Switzerland that this should be done?

For me ... so far not within the first 15 years.

You only need to register if you want to vote in UK elections and be able to continue to pay UK taxes.

I'm registered to vote in UK elections and I am not registered at the Embassy!!

I don't see why you would need to… I assume they would help me anyway if I had a real problem.

Re: British Consulate in Zurich?

I left the UK in 1989 and I have never registered with a British Consulate/embassy in any of the countries I've lived in since then. ( four if them all European).
Not really sure why it would be necessary in Europe at least, maybe more useful if you're living in somewhere a bit more 'exotic' like the middle east for example.

Re: British Consulate in Zurich?

I suppose though if you want to renew your passport without going back to the UK that you would then have to register in some way with the embassy?

No, you just have to send it off to the UK passport agency.

You can't renew your passport at the embassy anymore.
If for some reason you need an emergency travel document you can get it from the embassy but you don't need to be registered with them to do that.

That is good to know thanks! My Belgian friend had to go to the embassy to renew his passport, but I guess that it differs from country to country.

I renewed a couple or so, when it was done in Geneva, but was never registered - there or Bern.

Don't worry about registering ..... they know where you are, anyway.

Re: British Consulate in Zurich?

It's not mandatory to register.

I think it's to make it easier to contact you if the need should arise - military coup, mass evacuation, or something.

I'd be more inclined to register if I was living in Bogota, but not so much here.

It does depend on where you're from. A lot of countries still deal with passport renewals at the local embassies but the UK changed a few years ago ( first to Paris and now to Durham for most of Europe).
Belgium still does it via the embassy route, there used to be a small consular service in Neuchatel which issued passports but since the introduction of biometric passports they are no longer able to do this so passports can only be renewed at the larger embassy/consulate.
