Where to stay nearby Zurich

Hello everyone, a while ago I was around telling you I was moving to Zurich.
Well, that will happend next couple of weeks.
I intend to stay at hotel for the first few days, so I can visit the apartments I intend to rent.

Question is, I have a huge doubt about where is a good place to live nearby Zurich.
What do you think I should do? Stay at the center and visit cities around?
As I live in Sao Paulo - Brasil - everthing looks so close there.

I also want to find a job and for that porpouse, is it better for me to saty at city center?

(I am swiss citizen by the way)
Hope to hear from you soon...any brazilians around?

Re: Where to stay nearby Zurich

Firstly I have to say that it is very hard to get a nice appartment in the city. By hard I mean, if you just find a nice appartment for a good price in the city, you are already too late (gone by now) or it's a scam (I still see some out there).

The transport system is very good in the city so don't bother too much finding a place as close as possible to your future working place.

For a temporarily cheap start I always suggest finding a "WG" (Wohngemeinschaft) by sharing an appartment. http://www.wg-zimmer.ch

Desejo lhe boa sorte

Re: Where to stay nearby Zurich

Thank you Th3 !
I agree with you. Well, I suspected this transportation thing was easy, but is good to hear that to confirm!
What do you think about Uster or Winterthur? Any Close city (is it cities what you call?) you would recomend? There is a place nearby Lake Zurich named Kussnacht that please me as well.

I will check the WG Zimmer

Uster, or closeby "villages" are nice - it's close to the Greifensee, and reasonable prices still; you'd be in the city in 15-20 min depending where you live.
I know there are some Brasilians in Fällanden - I saw the flags during the world cup
But the only one I knew moved to Sankt Gallen

you could also join couchsurfing, and stay with people that way, for your first few days, and also post on the couchsurfing site that you are looking for a room in a shared flat, at least to get started.

In fact, there are no really horrible areas in and around Zurich, no slums, no polluted rivers, no huge endless towers of smoky factories. That means that one does not have to be so careful to choose the "nice" areas to be safe.

There is a huge shortage of accommodation here (unless you are in the top earning bracket), so if you want a flat of your own to rent (not sharing) it'll take you a while to find, and most likely you will end up looking at all sorts of suburbs and areas in and around the city.

During your first few weeks here, it's a good idea to travel up and down by the wonderful public transport (and a bicycle) and look at lots of different areas.

Yes, there are lots of Brazilians here. Everything will be much easier for you though with a Swiss passport, job, flat, etc.

More good news, this shortage of accommodation is overstressed in my view. Just have a good plan and you will be OK.

Renting a room short term until you get a job is a smart idea! Perhaps a hotel in the centre for the first night (100 to 150chf), so you can check out rooms? You can buy a Swiss half price rail pass for 150chf as a Swiss passport holder! Almost all public transport is then half price.

Checkout distance of Hotels/accommodation from "Bahnhofstrasse Zurich", which is the central street of the town (In fact most towns have a street called Bahnhofstrasse in the centre). Hotel Bristol is where I stayed first off.

Accommodation wise my vote went to Adliswil, reasonably close to central Zurich without being expensive, 15 to 20 minutes to most of Zurich I need by train, about the same by bicycle on off road cycle routes.

My 2 bedroom apartment costs 1500pcm, plus bills which is typical, they are not difficult to find in Adliswil in that price range, (mine is a quiet spot yet close to the station, lucky in that respect). I am looking to move out and hand it over or rent out a room, which would be 650 per month including bills, I'm flexible on dates.

Re: Where to stay nearby Zurich

We had a place rented from these guys when we first moved here...

Really convenient, treat it like a hotel and use it as a base for your house-hunt. It's cheaper than a hotel and less stressful then couch surfing and having to find somewhere ASAP.

Wadenswil is worth a look, reasonable prices, a nice place to live and great train links into the city, otherwise the normal areas around the edge of Zurich are all good. The only place I'd avoid is Schwammendingen, anywhere else is fine, even the likes of Altstatten.

Re: Where to stay nearby Zurich

A friend of mine used to stay in Winterthur. She recently moved to Zurich. If you live close to the train station in Winterthur, it's very easy to commute to Zurich (less than half an hour) and the rent is cheaper.

Well you might look here for accomodation. Sorry it's only in German. Good luck. Two of the people I work with ( nurses) come from Brazil.
