Well, I feel sorry for kids who just can't rebel, due to overly liberal parents. Poor things, they try harder and harder- and the parents still think it's cool, doh

Re: Returning a stolen bike

I've had my bike stolen before and it took a few hours to get over the immediate piss-off factor from the inconvenience.

I take care of my stuff (although clearly not well enough!) and it was insured.

I am glad I never got it back later after it was pinched. If it had been returned, I would have been angry, not grateful.

I agree with most of the above, get him to return it. This is a golden opportunity for you to milk some good behaviour into the group of them, I would talk to them together.
eg.
WTF are you doing losing a mate and leaving him there?
What, no one had a phone to sort this out?
Why didn't you call me so I could pick him up?
Next time make a plan with what ifs?
Yep, I done some bad shit with my mates but we always have each others back.

All is well that ends well.

I think giving kids at that age the 3rd degree is a sure-fire way of getting them to clam up. I'm just glad they honestly told me what happened. Gotta stay within the circle of trust, or you otherwise lose them.

I agree with you that the 3rd degree is a waste of time, I meant it more as a discussion that you facilitate and they all agree on what happens when shit happens. They do need a bit of a tune up for leaving a mate behind.

Yes, I certainly did that. I got the impression the kid got some play and wouldn't answer his phone. but details are not so forthcoming, so I didn't dig.

Re: Returning a stolen bike

Maybe bicycle repair boy thought he was on a promise, and he ditched his mates for his 90 seconds of gratification, and then got sent on his way.

Probably lucked out, and ended up nicking the bike in desperation, in an attempt to salvage a bad situation.

Re: Returning a stolen bike

There are 178 lost property offices (Fundbüro) in Swiss German towns, not many are at the police station.
