Re: Primark coming to Switzerland?

Prefer my clothes to be hand stitched by small children in poverty stricken countries in the Far East that have been kidnapped from their families. They're motivated to use tiny weeny sewing loops and not make any errors for fear of a severe beating.

Once their fingers become too big they're sent to the carpet factories to work 48 hour shifts to produce fake Persian rugs that have their production costs multiplied by a factor of 50 before some western visionary do-gooder shells out a small fortune to "help those in real need" make it through their shitty day.

But hey, my conscience is clear, it's just a T-shirt. Right?

It is quite tricky to know which of the High Street shops (and independent ones too) are not fuelling the sweatshop problem. Primark is an easy target as it is clear to almost everyone that its cheap pricing is only possible because the people at the bottom of the rung are paid peanuts (or less).

But there are lots of products which have a dubious origin or were manufactured in ways which would make us cry. Look no further than the shiny phone a lot of us hold in our hands!
Which phone? All of them or just iPhone?

There's a lot of fake piety in this thread.

Given the scrutiny to which companies like Primark are subject, I'd be surprised if they were any worse than any other company.

Can any of the people criticising Primark in this thread be absolutely certain that their clothes weren't made in sweatshop conditions, and if so how?
I will answer since I was the first! No I am certain of nothing, and it would not shock me to find there were other things I was using which had unethical history. I'm pretty ignorant tbh, but if something specific and evocative is shown to me like that interactive video it makes me feel like shit. I can live with feeling like shit if I can reason with myself For example the phone, I don't know about my phone (sony) but if I found out it was made in a sweatshop I would think, well, it's been made by someone and now I am treasuring it I'd still feel bad, but wouldn't feel like what they'd done was for nothing, just to be wasted... I keep phones for about 3 years before I change (and only then because they become too out of date to use) and I get the most out of them. The primark thing I couldn't reason at all because I was throwing the clothes in the bin. They'd get too tatty to even take to the charity shops. Knowing someone had made them for peanuts under crap conditions only for me to throw all their hard work in the bin, that's what got to me! There's my honest answer, for better or worse!

Yeah, but all clothes have brands, don't they? I don't think I've ever seen an item of clothing without a name attached somewhere.

How do you differentiate between one of the brands you name above and other brands? In what way do they differ?

Thank you - and that makes sense. But if you're influenced by documentaries and campaigns, doesn't mean that you're subject to someone else's agenda all the time? How do you know that C&A or Topshop aren't behind the propaganda war against Primark, for example?

I'm afraid I still don't understand. What, exactly, is a "designer" label? And how does one differ from any other kind of label? Is it an instinctive thing, or is there something I should be looking for?

I don't get into the whole fashion thing. I find the whole industry vulgar and like Pixie B said, far to disposable.

Re: Primark coming to Switzerland?

I watched an interesting doco the other day called "The World According to H&M" (can be streamed here: http://watchseries-online.ch/episode...ing-to-h-and-m). Didn't focus on the child labour, but more on avoiding taxes and EU loans....
Of course none of this stuff comes as a surprise, but it was interesting to see how it is done.

No, it's a genuine question. You seem to expect me to know what you mean by "brand", which to me just means "the company who made the clothes". Then you give me some vague hand-wave and expect me to know what you mean by "designer" clothes. I have no idea what "designer" clothes are, nor how they differ from any other clothes. Sure, I've heard of Gucci and Armani, but apart from being a bit more expensive, I genuinely have no idea in what way they differ from any other clothes, nor why you have a particular objection to them.

Now that we've had a fair dose of morality and judgement, is primark really coming to Geneva? All I found was a FB community page.

But how can you object to something you can't define?

The company which make the magic phone also work for other "brands" - see this article here.

A couple of years ago, I decided to boycott a couple of companies. As you can imagine, I only lasted a few weeks! I quickly realised that short of moving into a cave and killing my own buffalos, it was not possible to outsource everything which were not made by these two companies. Between the two of them, they pretty much had the market covered!

Re: Primark coming to Switzerland?

I think Pixie B's stand is admirable, and shouldn't be dismissed on the grounds that 'other companies are unethical'. Nothing wrong with people doing their bit where they can, rather than turning a blind eye to the whole thing.

As for phones, Fairphone offers an ethical alternative.

I am not the very model of a designated follower of fashion. You used the word object, I was merely too lazy to correct you, I just don't get into the whole fashion thing. Labels, brand, it's all wurst to me.

I don't! I probably am subject to people's agendas all the time I'm still a little bit naive and impressionable for someone my age, if I'm really honest with myself

I tried to Boycott Nestlé once. I found it incredibly difficult, especially when I realised they even made my cat's cat-food!!! I did give up
Since I moved to Switzerland I've noticed that Nestlé basically own Switzerland hahaha. It must be near impossible to boycott here!?
