Make some noise...

Hi,

I want to use a very noisey router on some strips of wood. I plan to do this on my balcony aand it will take me a few hours. I'd like to do so on a day when I'm not at work....

What is permitted at the weekend? How about public holidays? Can I fire up the router on a Saturday but Not a Sunday? How about Good Friday/Easter Monday. Is anything special about this Saturday?

Thanks

Andy

Friday, Sunday and Monday are public holidays, so better not if you want to maintain a good relationship with your neighbours.
Saturday is just a Saturday.

Re: Make some noise...

Good-Friday is the "highest" as in most religious day for Protestants (evangelic) and as you are in Zurich which is still mostly a protestant dominated canton I strongly advice against using that tool tomorrow. Monday might be ok, Sunday is out of question as well simply by it being Sunday even more so because itís actually a religious holiday. So as stated above if you want to use it over Easter, either Saturday (best option) or Monday (second best).

Re: Make some noise...

You could always try the "I'm making a representative Cross for the Good Lord Jesus who saved our souls from hell and damnation" excuse if you have any clergymen complaining about the noise.

Joseph was also a carpenter. And being Jewish, he probably would have used all of the daylight available on Friday until the dusk before Sabbath.

Allegedly.

This... but also I'd advise you to drop a card in all your neighbours letterboxes telling them you will be doing noisy work on the balcony on Saturday (I'd not start till 10) and that this is exceptional- apologise and if you have only a few neighbours, put a chocolate bunny, or similar behind the door on Sunday. And hope for the best - you only need one to be ackward (Swiss or not) bonne chance.

No way ..... during the day time, apart from lunchtime, you are free to make as much noise as you want, without informing anyone - let alone bribing anyone with sugar fixes.
If they don't like it, then tough.

Monday should also be fine - it's not a religious holiday - most shops will be open.
Friday is a definite no-no, and Sunday, too (although I have in the past, done some routing on a Sunday - in a Catholic stronghold, to boot ...... and forewarning anyone, would have been the last thing I would have done).

Announcing certainly won't hurt, but I (being swiss) probably wouldn't unless I have a distinct reason (say, apartments with small children who sleep over the noon, or some such). By mentioning noisy times you're simultaneously limiting yourself.

Why offer something simply for using your rights? I see exactly zero reason.

As for when:
Any day except sundays and public holidays (the latter include tomorrow and Easter Monday), during the hours your Hausordnung allows - usually that means it's ok to start around 7:00-7:30.

The opposite here, Friday is fine as it's a normal workday, but Monday is a public holiday and all is closed.

Just common courtesy, here, there or anywhere. Why wake them all up on their day off at 7.30 anyhow. One thing is 'rights' the other is being a good neighbour. At the end of the day, if you are courteous to them, they might return the courtesy another time. Makes no difference wherever you are.

You're mixing up my post, do notice the context I use the term "rights" in.

As for the rest, the question is what's permitted, as opposed to what's polite.
