Loud TV at night - neighbour - what to do?

Hi,

I thought I'd post what happens to us sometimes. Our neighbour above turns on the TV quite loud often around 22:30pm - 23:00pm and after a while he makes it lower: by the time we are already awaken.

Today I decided to go upstairs and ring the bell: nothing happened, he/their didn't opened the door.

Of course I will speak to him during the day, but I would be thankful if you share ideas about this topic. I will approach him friendly but if it doesn't work I would like to know what you would do.

In the next coming days I will ring the bell if it happens again, but my question is: what to do in this kind of situations? Should I speak with the landlord? call the police? ...?

Thanks for sharing ideas

He doesn't hear the ringing while he's watching TV I guess...
Maybe consider placing anonymous letter on his door in the beginning, or visit him while he's not watching TV.
If it doesn't help, police can be used...

I mean my parents really made sure that me and my friends did not make any noise since it is essential to be a good neighbor if you ever want to move out and your new landlord will ask your former neighbor and landlord for references so it is surprising that your neighbors do not respect that

Re: Loud TV at night - neighbour - what to do?

Maybe he is half deaf and does not realize. I'd start with a friendly anonymous note .... . That way (if he is the kind of person) he will not take revenge by now stomping on the floors etc and making things worse. If it continuous after the note, go and have a chat.

I'd prefer getting a note instead of being talked to on a first occasion. Got talked to yesterday by the concierge about parking.... I park in the coop lot and they seem not to approve of it..... . Would have preferred the note

I feel your pain! My folks are here visiting and I have to keep telling my dad to turn the TV down in respect of the neighbours (and my sanity!)

Nothing like trying to sleep with bl*dy soccer drumming through the pillow!!

Re: Loud TV at night - neighbour - what to do?

I had the same issue with my neighbour upstairs and simply wrote a polite and friendly note reminding them that you can hear things pretty well in the building and its hard to sleep with loud noises after 22. That fixed it, haven't had an issue since.

Passive-aggressive notes are the way to go.

He might not be in and be using the TV as a "security" device. Point him at one of these, they don't make a noise: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Home-Secur...item35e7312926

Hi,

Today I decided to go upstairs and ring the bell: nothing happened, he/their didn't opened the door.
Maybe the guy has a genuine hearing problem? If he's turning the TV up so loud so as to hear it properly and didn't hear the doorbell, it might be safe to assume he has a hearing defect.

My dad has great hearing within most ranges, but for example cannot hear the landline telephone at home in one of the rooms due to the pitch of the ring.

You could leave a note, but like emails at work, often the intonation can be missed and it just upsets the recipient who gets the wrong end of the stick. Then again, my mindset is more of the "if you have something to say, then please say it" (politely, of course), then there's less chance of any ambiguity.

I'd just knock on the door and have a quick chat. You never know, things like this turn out to be much less problematic than you first thought and you might actually meet someone you like and get on with tremendously.

Re: Loud TV at night - neighbour - what to do?

If the note won't help, maybe make him realize annoyance of turning TV loudly at night...turn your TV loudly in the morning or sth.

Re: Loud TV at night - neighbour - what to do?

Leave him a polite sticker note on the door. Try up to 3 times, take photograph of each. Only if this doesn't help you have the right to complain to the local police about noise disturbance. Have some evidence with you, it will help them verify that your claim is valid.

In your case regulations for 'Nachtruhe' will apply. I saw you live in Zug, here is more information:

http://www.zg.ch/behoerden/gemeinden...earchterm=Lärm

If your neighbour doesn't comply with noise regulations, he can be fined based on the clause:

§ 9 Lärm, Ruhestörung
1 Mit Busse wird bestraft, wer
a) aussergewöhnlichen Lärm verursacht, der über das üblicherweise zu
tolerierende Mass am fraglichen Ort oder im Zusammenhang mit einer
traditionellen Veranstaltung hinausgeht;
b) die am fraglichen Ort massgebliche oder übliche Nachtruhe durch
übermässigen Lärm stört.
2 Fahrlässigkeit ist strafbar.

Hope this helps.

Re: Loud TV at night - neighbour - what to do?

My neighbours kids can be quite loud and the wall separating our houses seems to be paper thin. One of the kids has a tendancy to scream at the top of her lungs (for whatever reason). I've noticied that the kids now stay up later than previously (as they are getting older I guess!) and at times have to listen to this girl screaming at 11 pm or later. I'm not sure what her issue is but if I call the police about this, will they do anything?

Would this not be a privacy issue?

If you put a sticker on the door belonging to somebody else you can't take a picture of it without permission!

For goodness sake, the person probably doesn't know they are loud.. Knock the door a bit louder during TV time.. Or go there 30 mins before expected TV time (or before going to bed) and just mention it's audible from downstairs.

probably very simple.

Or by the doorbell, then it's not crossing any privacy boundaries. Staircase is a shared, communal area. I wouldn't knock on the door excessively loud at 11 pm, you might disturb with it other neighbours even more than the person with loud TV.

I'd talk to the landlord first. I'm all for passive-aggressive notes but it's a bit of TV, that's all. The landlord will tell him and you will have a record.

There is no privacy issue taking a picture of a door btw.

Re: Loud TV at night - neighbour - what to do?

We had a similar problem with our neighbours stereo and TV - went to talk to them and they genuinely had no idea we could hear it. They figured that because they never heard ours, we mustn't hear his.

We have great insulation in the walls, but nothing between the floor/ceiling, plus the bass really travels.

We invited the neighbour to come and hear what it sounds like from inside our apartment, and now they have realised.

surely a passive-aggressive approach would have been more fun?

Why wouldn't you be? I'm usually asleep sometime around 11pm - and up and about around 6am.
