Send item without cleared payment?

Hey all,

I sold an item to a member on this forum and need to get it to him by Monday. He sent the payment today but I don't think it will have cleared before Monday and then it's too late.

Does anyone have an opinion on...send item before cleared payment: yah / nah?

He sent me a photo of the payment slip from the bank

Cheers for any advice!

N

Re: Send item without cleared payment?

I've had people on EF send me stuff even before they told me where to send the money!

However, it's too late to get it to him by Monday.

Re: Send item without cleared payment?

I would.

I bought something from a member this week. She sent the item before we paid for it. By the time I received it, she still hadn't got the money, because the bank returned it, no idea why. So, we tried paying today again.

It feels nice when someone trusts you

It's true, it's just not something I've done before, not that I don't trust the person!

Thanks for your advice

He drives a Ferrari, so he'll pony up, don't worry.

The payment slip from the post is in the system, he can't retract it.

Now tell us, which watch did you sell him?

Paypal only gives very limited protection (buyer or seller) to direct sales that aren't either through eBay or a website checkout process, effectively for fraud or hacked accounts but not simple denial of payment, failure to deliver etc.

For someone in good standing on EF, delivering to a Swiss address, I'd be very comfortable. Biggest risk of course would be a hacked EF account, not a hacked back/card account which is probably a lot more secure.

Re: Send item without cleared payment?

There was a time - not sooo many years ago - when no-one in Switzerland paid for anything before getting it. It worked with only few exceptions.
By paying cash you can get a percent or two off in many cases instead of paying bank fees.

Re: Send item without cleared payment?

I just had a very pleasant transaction with another EF member. We traded some emails and because I was going to pay Die Post charges, (s)he mailed the item and then told me the shipping charge amount to be added to the item price. I set up the PayPal transfer the next day. Not a large CHF amount, but still nice to be trusted.

Still works like that for certain companies (Conrad, for example).

Re: Send item without cleared payment?

I wouldn't hesitate to send something before receiving payment, unless there was some particular reason for suspecting dodginess. It's what I usually do when I sell stuff on Ricardo, and I never had any problems.

The other day we took a client out to dinner at a restaurant where the credit card reader wasn't working. At the end of the meal I said I would go and get some cash from an ATM, but the restaurant owner wouldn't hear of it - he posted us a bill instead.

In 25 years here, I've never heard of anyone going into a bank to make a manual payment like this, so no I would not ship without clearance. In my experience people normally make manual payments via the post office, not the bank which is why I would be concerned about it.

Re: Send item without cleared payment?

I've sent stuff without waiting for cleared payment, maybe six times here on EF and on a Buy/Sell Facebook group I use.

And people have sent me stuff too where I'm sure payment wouldn't have cleared yet.

Not saying I would always do it, I guess you just get a feel for who you are dealing with and decide.. Like somebody else said, unless i could smell a reason why not, I probably would in most cases.
