Base salary and simples jobs

Well,

I feel a little bad about asking this, because everyone seems so high graduates here lol...but ow well, I hope some of you can help me.

Well I finally got here! I am in Uster and really happy!
I am doing some interviews for simples jobs like in Restaurants, Nanny, etc...well, someone has to do there jobs...in meanwhile, I am studying German, wich has been a good surprise, I am learning really fast and loving it.

I am swiss citizen, so I dont need a permit. But I speak only Portugues and English. And I am 31 years old...I have worked with several things in my life, most of time Marketing. I am looking also for a job in this field, but is beeing really hard without perfect Deutsch yet.

What should I ask as a salary for these semple jobs? I mean, per hour is 25CHF OK ? Or this is to little? (Gross salary).

I know this is not much for most of you, but for me is beeing a new begining, so I am really happy for theses oportunities.

Well, if you don't know the local lingo, it will be hard, even getting a really basic job(like serving in a restaurant or bar, Cleaning for example).
You always need somebody , who is able to translate.
Or you find a job, where your language problem is not a "big" problem , like an english pub or something else.

It's probably not a question of asking its more you take what they offer you.25 is almost too much for such work. You would be lucky to get 20 CHF.

... unless the OP works with fellow Portuguese speakers.

At my place of work the cleaners don't speak a word of German, but communicate perfectly well with our Italian speaking caretaker.

Re: Base salary and simples jobs

Funny thing, I made a test yesterday at a restaurant. I Speak german better than everyone in the kitchen.
The guy said I don't fit...I don't know what I did wrong lol..I didn't break anything, worked hard and did a lot of stuff...
He said he wants someone that speaks better german...well ok...I just felt a little desmotivated...but I know something better will come.

Thing is, I was hoping at least to receive de $$$ for the test day, well I worked (a lot 8h non-stop)...but he said that is not the way things are here...I felt bad cause of it you know? ... I don't know if this is really the way things are here....or he just thought he wanted to be smart...!
Like - if you know a employer is seek for a day - and you need someone for just one day - you can get someone saying is test day and not paying...
either way, I will keep trying.

Do you know, is normal to work for free in the first day as a test?

Yup. It's called a "schnuppertag". Just one of those things, I'm afraid.

The big stores like COOP and Migros are often looking for people-especially in the summer school holiday time.

Otherwise you can look in at where I work-in an Elderly peoples home in Zürich. They have 4 or 5 Portugese working here in Service ( cafeteria and restaurant and in the laundry. There are also alot of Italian/Spanish speakers here.

Re: Base salary and simples jobs

" i'm afraid " . Its a figure of speech. Got nothing to do with him being afraid.

And yes a day to see if you like the job is not paid. Its the same where I work.An interview is usually the first thing. But you do get a free meal

Re: Base salary and simples jobs

In my experience it is normal to work a shift for free as a test. I've worked 6 "trial shifts" here.... 4 in gastro were for 2 hours, wasn't paid but got free food, and 3 our of 4 I got a job offer. One in gastro was 12 hours, didn't get anything and no job offer. I felt ripped off as I had asked about 4 hours into the shift if I'd get paid and was told yes, but it didn't happen. Another in a different field was 7 hours, no pay but a 100 chf gift certificate somewhere (got a job offer). What the laws are I don't know, but it is normal.

25 chf is high for someone with no work experience here. Good luck if you can get it, but 21.33 chf is the minimum for gastro and the places that will hire someone with no experience here and limited language skills tend to pay that or 21.50. Many places pay substantially more, but they will want people with experience and references from here and/or an education in service.

Depending on where you work, 21.50 can turn into 30 chf with tips. If you're just starting out here, I'd say take what you can get, but keep applying elsewhere.

To give some more context, many people in food packaging and other simple jobs get by on 15.60 chf an hour.

Re: Base salary and simples jobs

You can get 25F an hour as an independent cleaning person. You will have to pay your own taxes and social contributions on that. Less as a babysitter.

It is not impossible to find a marketing job with just English. The only issue is that it will take time to get your first job. There is crazy competition out there!

So, now you have to balance working to support yourself with having time to dedicate to finding a marketing job. It could take a good 18 months for find a job and that is being dedicated to your job search. Not sending off one or two applications a month.

Good luck!

"I'm afraid" in this case, can also mean "I'm sorry to say" or just "unfortunately".

I volunteer my time and services on a part-time basis, in return for a small donation to my beer and gadget fund, in a non-qualified, menial position and receive about CHF 28 per hour.

But it keeps me off the streets.

Re: Base salary and simples jobs

Have you contacted any of the temporary agencies? Since you already have permission to work I am sure they'd love to have you on the list of available workers. Kelly Services and Manpower come to mind, but there may be others.

Also try your local Coop, Migros and Denner stores and offer to stock shelves. You probably don't need more than A2 for that.

I am sure you will find something, but it will take patience and a lot of applications.

General question for those in the know: As for the Schnuppertag, is it possible to get an agreement in writing in advance?

It seems very unfair to tell someone they are going to get paid and then after they've worked 8 hours to turn around and say sorry, we lied. It seems like a setup ripe for abuse of workers, where a restaurant or other facility can have almost non-stop free labor just by telling people they have a Schnuppertag or two.

Where did the OP say that in any of her posts?
Where did I say it was the OP? See this post (emphasis mine):

in restaurants there is indeed people that don't speak a word of german, but they have connections, relatives, etc.
20-25 seems about right.
the trial thing is abused sometimes, not the first time i hear about it (in ticino), but you can't do much about it really. even high graduates have to do unpaid internships to get a job with low salary in several sectors. maybe that guy didn't want you because he's afraid of a swiss or maybe wanted a swiss because he needs some german speaking people.

Really?

I am A2/B1 German… I worked in an Airport in the UK for many years in Operations… there is no way my German is good enough to work in any of the ground services jobs apart from airport/aircraft cleaner.
