When will it snow

I know you are not weather forecasters but when does it usually start snowing? My husband said it didn't snow till about the second week in Dec last year, is this the norm or does it vary from year to year, I had hoped it would start snowing soon, we have some friends coming the first weekend in Dec and stupidly I told them it would be all lovely and snowy and xmassy, think they are going to be dissapointed. I have heard however that only a few years ago it was snowing in October, are we just having an unusually mild winter?

Re: When will it snow

a few years ago indeed there was a monster dump in October/early November - made for some good early season action.

But typically I'd say weather isn't so predictable until into the new year. Until then, you're taking your chances

We had snow by probably end of 3rd week of November last year.
I can check the date of my digital pics of our pets frolicking in the snow

We went to the Bern Zwiebel festival on 27th (ish) and it was glorious snow everywhere.

I was just out for a runaround at lunch time. It's amazing how warm this is. Meanwhile it's snowing in Australia. We are all well and truly in big trouble

Do foriegners pay creedance to the Füün?

At dinner last night, my (Swiss) fiance was commenting on the crazy vibe that he'd experience that day. "It's a full moon or somehting". I instantly thought about the headache that I continued to have through the day and said "do you think it's the Füün?"
The Füün is the wind that comes from the south. I have always thought that the Swiss were insane for attributing headaches, moodiness and even cakes baking unevenly, to this fairly regular weather pattern.
Am I assimilated, or does this mean that the Füün is actually a force of nature?
I mean, I used to believe that I was, indeed, more amorous during the Santa Anna winds, but the Füün?
What's the Auslander Meinung?

Re: When will it snow

The Foehn is the same phenomena as the Santa Anna, so watch out

I'd still like to know how warm dry wind can affect people so much.

It's like how the light bright hazy sky here "gives people headaches". It's called glare, put some sun glasses on you idjits. Sunglasses have benefits other than just looking cool and being something to wear on summer holidays.

Re: When will it snow

I'm just glad it is nice and warm and non-snowy! Growing up in one of the few places in the world that gets lake effect snow (including the great blizzards of 77 and 78), I've come to dread the first snowfall each year

Last year, it was the winter and the snow that wouldn't end. At the end of March, we were out of town - and Basel was snowed under by nearly 2 feet of snow. By the time we got home about 4 days later, it was all melted. So for you snow lovers, it gets a later start here, but it keeps going and going and going....

Well you had me confused with your Blizzard of '78 at first -- it is this for me ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Northea...izzard_of_1978 ). Beyond that, if I am not mistaken, it does not snow too much [relative answer] here in Switzerland outside of the mountains and higher-elevation suburbs -- even in winter? I was here rather often during the winter of '04-'05 and there was not too much. Although there was a big snow storm last winter with about 2 feet of snow, it was considered the storm of the century and such storms are extremely rare here. In most regions snow may fall, but it does not stay like throughout the northern regions of the US and most of Canada. However -- I would think that we are all due for our first snowfall within the next few weeks. I have already seen snowflakes this year at 350-400m, so...

Hi
Earlier this month (November), it snowed for around 20 minutes in Zurich area. The snow did not stay though.

Re: When will it snow

There seems to be a little dusting down to around 750m above sea level now. I would say this is good news for many

Re: When will it snow

I can testify to that personally, Lobman. I am just a few miles off Santis and all the surroundings are completely white...and it looks way closer than 750m.

Re: When will it snow

My Swiss co-workers tell me that Switzerland is getting warmer and the snows used to start earlier and stay around longer. This is true where I grew up in the Rocky Mountains as well. People seem much more concerned about global warming here than in the US, perhaps because back home everything has become a bone for the politicians to pick, so we are mostly numb to all the **** we hear from either side.
Another phenomena in common, my Swiss friends say "the snow used to be so much deeper than when I was a kid". Is this just perspective since we were all a lot shorter then?

Re: When will it snow

i was to laax on sunday and the slopes were kind of tropical green, then i checked out the webcams yesterday and the whole panorama shifted to virginal white. i'm out to check that virgin tomorrow, an Absolut® bottle in one hand and a snowboard in the other... who will be up inthe mountains over the weekend?
