That's no turn-around. Anyone feeling a bit down, under the weather, or simply woke up a bit grumpy just tops themselves, leaving the happy behind.
That is so true! Here we have a very high suicide rate, brought about by expectations of perfection.

If you cannot conform to the neighbour's standards you are an abject failure. Look about you, look at young people and the struggles they have with the Swiss expectations of perfection! No wonder they all look unhappy.

I find this survey offensive, it detracts from the truth. Like many things here, failure is covered up, and not allowed to be on show.

Define "happy."

I've met about half the Swiss in Central Switzerland and am related to at least a fourth of them. I would not label them happy but I definitely would say they're content.

I don't think that's the same thing but then again....

define "happy."
The problem is, is that many people perceive happiness as a goal and end result, in it's own right - it's not ..... it's purely a bi-product of when everything else, in one's life is tickety-boo.

This will obviously be measured differently in each individual, due to each's own personal hopes, expectations, needs and aspirations.

If one strives for happiness, itself, alone, it will never be found, and conversely, others will never fully realise happiness, as they are forever pushing their thresholds.
What might have once been a level of attainable objectives, set in order to reach a certain contentment, have been reached and surpassed, unnoticed - as the boudaries have now been pushed even further away.

EF didn't make it in the top 10? I'm surprised.
This is because of extreme measures undertaken by the local to hide all the complaints corner's content

This must mean that the only people complaining in this country are EF members

complaining makes people happy

They have every reason to be the happiest, but I wish this happiness showed on their faces more often.

on visits to Basel I very often saw and see happy smily faces, admittedly more so than in Zürich

Here is the report: http://worldhappiness.report/

Where you can also see that people living in Lybia (63) are happier than in Portugal (88) or Greece (102).
Or that people in Venezuela (23) are happier than in France (29) or Spain (36)...

But I guess the Swiss won't pick up these inconsistencies, as it ranks them in the 1st place.

the country you mention is LIBYA /LIBYEN -- just for the records

All six figures are important and CAN ADD to happiness, but in reality are NOT happiness.

This confirms my theory that (the wrong sort of) foreigners are the happiest people here. There're so little expectations from them! They don't have to struggle to meet neighbours' standards...by definition they'll never reach them.

Re: Swiss are the happiest people in the world

suicide is caused by a number of factors (maybe it's the prevention system that is worse than other countries, also there is legal euthanasy here with people from abroad coming too), and they are statistically irrelevant if you wanna measure overall happiness.

That's mainly because the trains run on time.

Ever been to a Migros on Sunday? Def not a happy place.
Errr, that's because all of them (apart from Shopville) are closed???

Maybe that's why they feel empty inside.

It's unlikely for a real Swiss to head out to Migros on Sunday since they should have planned their week and bought all the food they need for Sunday or even the week later :P
