Vineweevil nematode solution - any experience?

Does anyone have experience using nematodes to control vine weevil (Dickmaulrüssler) ?

It seems to be about 20-30 chf for enough to do our borders, which is similar to the chemical solution cost.

The chemicals don't work anyway, or not for more than a few weeks at best, so any feedback on the nematodes would be helpful.

I 'd be interested too. I've never got round to getting any.

I've been picking of the beetles late evening by torch light and used a chemical for the weevils but have lost some relatively expensive plants over the last couple of years.

What are they eating in your garden?

I've no direct experience, but here's a little info. They recommend Aug./Sept. application...

I've used them for the last few years & they do work. The larvae change color & seem to dry up. You need to ensure that the ground is kept damp so the nematodes can get to the larvae & don't die off.

They can be applied twice per year - April into early May (before the adults 'hatch') & August/September (after the new ones are laid).

My concern is that it could already be too late. I put the nematodes out last weekend, but have already seen some adult weevils - hopefully they were just a few early ones.

Re: Vineweevil nematode solution - any experience?

Thanks for the info - where do you get yours?

ps. even if a bit too late, hopefully it would reduce their numbers and the amount of damage which would still be a big improvement

I get them from Andermatt Biogarten (http://www.biogarten.ch/). The delivery usually takes a couple of days.

Many thanks, I've ordered a batch.

Hopefully they'll come before the weekend - if the forecast for Friday is correct damp ground shouldn't be a problem

Re: Vineweevil nematode solution - any experience?

Are you sure that the larvae are Dickmaulrüssler?

I ask because while I've used nematodes against Dickmaulrüssler larvae with some success, Maikäfir (or JuniKäfir, or Rosenkäfir) larvae look similar - and I mistakenly used them in planters infested with Maikäfir with poor results.

Here's a nifty chart showing the difference:

Good luck!
