Staying in Switzerland/ Europe after my residency permit expires

Hi everyone!

I'm a masters student at Uni Zurich and I'm from Singapore. My passport gives me 90 days of travel in Europe/Switzerland without a visa.

I currently have a 1 year residency "B" permit which expires in June (from Canton Luzern). Immigration here has always been an absolute nightmare and they just don't answer any of my questions properly.

I would like to leave Switzerland in July/August instead of June. Will staying past my expired permit be a problem since I can then be a "tourist"?

Does anyone have any idea if I have to deregister somewhere or any processes I have to follow?

I think my correspondence with Immigration Luzern is simply getting lost in translation!

If you have to finish your master in these months it's better to have everything in order tbh.
If you're just staying for tourism i guess the problem poses itself only if you get checked by the police, in that case i don't know if it's sufficient to say you left the schenge area sometimes in the last 90 days.

Re: Staying in Switzerland/ Europe after my residency permit expires

Since this year you've alrady stayed in CH on your B permit for more than 90 days it seems inconceivable that you'd get an additional 90 days based on your "lesser" being-a-tourist-condition. Certainly a "higher" (B) permit voids all legitimacies based on any lesser "permit" (the latter would include you being a Singapore citizen).

If the above didn't hold, you could get first an explicit tourist visa, and then stay an additional 90 days based on the implicit visa inherent on you having a Singapore passport.

Note:
I've never needed a visa in CH. The above is just my personal logic.

As long as you officially deregister from Switzerland when your permit ends, you would have no problems staying on your tourist visa. Holding contracts with mobile phone companies, insurance companies or appartment leases may be a problem if you are here on a touristic visa.

So I suggest deregistration; then you are legitimately a tourist.

Thank you very much for this! You are absolutely right. I have deregistered and am now on my tourist visa and this is also what the Luzern authorities have confirmed. I also got back in to Switzerland after a holiday in Morocco and the passport control confirmed that this is right.

I hope this post helps anyone else in the same situation!

Cheers

Thanks Max, but this is not correct. The person who posted after you was right, but thank you for trying to help!
