Not quite ready for Top Chef

So some of us are not quite ready for cooking competitions. I forgot to strain the pea soup again & it was full of fibers. Kids politely ate it, picking the bits out of each spoonful, and said it tasted good despite the bits.
What are your recent "not quite ready" moments?

Forgot to put the water in the saucepan of green beans and turned the ring on. Didn't realise until the burning smell wafted my way.

Re: Not quite ready for Top Chef

My restaurant in the US I would leave the pilot light on on the stoves with the beefstew on top....would sit all night like that and be perfect in the morning.

While cleaning the stove that night I must have turned on the stove bit more than the pilot light. Upon arrival in the morning , place was filled with smoke and the stench was what I imagine dead bodies smell like. The stew had turned to a tar like go ..... smell stayed for weeks , pot was to be thrown out and 300$ worth of beef out the door........

Turned on the fan in the kitchen and filled up the whole of tourist state street into a dead body smell for a few minutes

Re: Not quite ready for Top Chef

Just yesterday, was cooking a pot of red beans, thought i'd warm up the water before putting on the pressure cooker lid. Totally forgot, untill i kept smelling something burning. Was someone smoking a cigar? Pot? Oh sheeeit. Burnt beans. But i cleaned the pot with a mixture of baking soda, salt and vinegar and cooked another batch. But the burnt smell persists.

Re: Not quite ready for Top Chef

I put my burger buns under the grill (in oven) and set 3 mins on the timer - when 2 would have been sufficient.

Re: Not quite ready for Top Chef

Last week I had a late night at work and, once I got home around midnight, I was craving boiled potatoes and carrots (no idea why), so I put the water on, the veggies in. I unintentionally fell asleep on the couch and woke up five hours later: not good.

A few years ago I forgot to put water in my Italian coffee machine (caffettiera), turned on the stove, went to do something else and forgot all about it. Until I heard a loud BANG! and the thing went flying like a rocket!

Re: Not quite ready for Top Chef

I wanted to reward the kids with a movie and some homemade popcorn. Unfortunately I burnt the first batch of popcorn. Okay, so I made a second batch - oops another pan with a burnt bottom! Third time lucky, but by then the kids refused to eat that "stinky pock-korn" ! Who could blame them!

Re: Not quite ready for Top Chef

I made a home made Pizza, opened the oven door and dropped the pizza face down on the floor. Scraped it up, salvaged it and got it in the oven. Opened the door when it was done and the rack slid out too fast and the Pizza ended up face down again on the floor. This time in the trash, I got my coat and went out to eat.

I wanted to surprise OH and took out some fresh ice out of the freezer. Needless to say, I managed to burn it up. All we had for dinner that night was soup instead.
I'll get my coat.

Re: Not quite ready for Top Chef

Christmas lunch with the hugest turkey known to man and 12 people to feed. A friend had bought it as a chick in France, bought the feed, killed and plucked it. And carried it across town in his rucksack on his moped at 6 in the morning.

Add to that "too many cooks spoil the broth", we did eventually eat at midnight after numerous calls to my mother, a friend etc. At that point i think we only had about two bottles of wine left!! Arguments had started, love affairs had started. Most people were very merry.

I left the carcass out on the table and my four cats attacked it during the night so it went in the bin. I had thought about making soup, but probably didn't have a pot big enough.

All in all a Christmas to remember.

Re: Not quite ready for Top Chef

Yesterday I wanted to make a rhubarb cake. Peeled and cut it nicely, then put it in a pot with a bit of liquid and sugar to pre-cook it for 5 minutes.

Forgot all about it, don't know how long it was on, I heard a strange sound from the kitchen and went to look, rhubarb had turned into sauce and sugar burnt all over the stove, it was great to clean

Re: Not quite ready for Top Chef

I did the pizza thing.

Invited a friend and his wife round. His wife is Muslim.

So i said to the boyfriend - get a vegetarian one numerous times.

Arrives 6 pm - they are arriving in an hour. I walk in - he is picking bits off the pizzas. Bits of ham or some sort of meat. Oh, i got a four seasons... why not the Margarita (i needed one by then. To drink) - two for the price of one...

We went to a very nice restaurant.

Re: Not quite ready for Top Chef

The answer to most of these problems, is to go and buy a really loud kitchen timer, that is extremely irritating and use it every time you cook/bake.

Failing that, use your smartphone with the timer.

Having said that, I went shopping for ingredients to make chili-con-carne ... got hope really hungry and was salivating at the thought of the chili once cooked. Started on the recipe only to find I'd forgotten to buy the mince
