I know how this sounds....but honestly, what are the chances that a Swiss (Swiss Swiss ) would have done it? (close to 0?)
And yet there is constant advice on here to put old furniture on the street with a GRATIS sign on it. And each and every foreigner's response to that is a surprise, like "wow, I can do that?"
I think it is a little bit of everyone's doing. But since there is a higher percentage of foreigners living in Zurich city, one naturally assumes it is them. But I do know alot of foreigners that are very attracted to the Swiss supposive mentality of clean streets and structure.
I guess if we all knew who was doing all of this, then it wouldn't be happening after a few weeks of police stake outs and dna testing of used trash.

0 - we use normal bags and all our rubbish gets weighed at the mollock bin. Brilliant and very cheap- if you avoid as much packaging as poss, recycle properly and compost the rest (either at home or at the communal compost).

But washable nappies are very popular here, I can tell you!

That's even better than what we have in the German part.

Well if you recycle one will not need many bags. We usually use one 35L bag every 10 days for two persons. This makes 36 bags/year, that makes 61.20 CHF/year or 30.60 CHF/year per person. Even if you make double the amount of waste it will not cost a fortune. I think I have to agree with you, most of the times people are just too lazy...however, if I compare the situation here with my other home in Italy, we do not really have much of a problem with illegal garbage disposal...
I have to say, I think the level of recycling you are encouraged to do here in CH is great.

We (a family of four) manage 1 35L bag per week, so around 150 CHF per year or 38 per person per year. That's good value in my opinion.

We have a recycling center down the road from us and so I also manage on one 35L every week to one and a half weeks..

Respect to those that still use washable nappies, whilst I do my best to save in most areas (financially and for the environment) I could not commit to using washable nappies!

I took a picture of this "warning", close to Triemlispital (ZH).
Some people decided not to go to the special recycling places and instead dumped everything on the street. Well...in front of the garbage cans..at least.
Someone from the Recycling in ZH , as you can see their car in the background, took a pic of the garbage and left a ''note'' for everyone to see, especially for the ones that dumped the mattress, TV. etc.
I know someone on my street that does this also....but never took a pic...
The apartment block next to me dump everything outside their place... but how do you know who dumped it unless you camp outside and film? That van is hardly inconspicuous.

Re: Illegal garbage disposal -1000 CHF fine.

I must admit, i have found some really good stuff on the street.

A table for my computer and a really comfy, almost new chair. and a few bookcases to remember a few. One great find was a couple moving out and they had six of those plastic storage boxes that slide under your bed. Those were really appreciated and i still have them.

You just have to get there early and hope there is no rain.

...not to mention earning yourself a reputation as the local weirdo in the process.
