Illegal garbage disposal -1000 CHF fine.

I took a picture of this "warning", close to Triemlispital (ZH).
Some people decided not to go to the special recycling places and instead dumped everything on the street. Well...in front of the garbage cans..at least.
Someone from the Recycling in ZH , as you can see their car in the background, took a pic of the garbage and left a ''note'' for everyone to see, especially for the ones that dumped the mattress, TV. etc.
I know someone on my street that does this also....but never took a pic...

That mattress and bed frame wouldn't be there for long. It's a very sought-after size.

Re: Illegal garbage disposal -1000 CHF fine.

Where we are there are big dump days (déchets encombrants) 4 times a year where you can plonk metal, wood, old chairs etc outside & they come & pick it up - preceded by various French white vans of people coming for a rummage & recycle. Any other time we have to take it to the recycling center.

I know how this sounds....but honestly, what are the chances that a Swiss (Swiss Swiss ) would have done it? (close to 0?)

Well, we have a 100% Swiss lady in our street who keeps dropping her garbage bag in front of her door, on the other site of the road and/or is too lazy to put it in the bin and leave it next to it.

How much do you reckon we spend on taxed bags each year?

I think it might be depressing to add it up.
But even as an Auslander I would never dream of putting anything else in the bin.

Re: Illegal garbage disposal -1000 CHF fine.

Bed or TV set disposal guideline and its legal:

- get apartment with fireplace,
- set fire in fire place,
- chop bed or TV (don't let it blow up) to small pieces,
- throw them into the flames and let ashes form,
- pour water over what's remaining from process of burning,
- prepare 10 x 3.5litre refusal bags and stick the yellow Gemeinde stickers on each of them (it will set you back 20-30 chuffs max),
- fill up all the bags thoroughly (bed springs covered by ash included),
- wait for the next garbage collection day in calendar,
- open bottle of champagne bought for CHF100 and celebrate saved CHF870,- in your pocket,

Pass it on and for ever 1000 recipients something good will happen to you ...

Certainly above 0%, probably less than 75% (the statistical chance based on population percentage)

You reckon? I'd say it's not that bad when you take everything you can to the recycle bins, including the biodegradable waste. Anyway, I think it's a fair system (as each pays for his own garbage) which encourages recycling and discourages the "just buy and throw away" culture. And it functions! You'll never see piles of garbage bags here, waiting to be collected..

She comes out of her house with it, drop it on the side of the road instead to walk 50 meters and put it in the communal bin. If she does pass by the bin, she drops the bag next to it instead to open the lid of the bin and drop it in it.

Yeah, one time I've seen old furniture pieces that were looking so worn out I'm sure nobody took them...next to them there was even a used toilet brush!.. (but hey, with a holder that seemed as if it was expensive when they bought it ) See, complete services... Some people..sigh.

In ZH, the garbage bags that you should be using are too expensive. So, I've seen a few black or grey bags, that are not allowed in ZH, but people use them because they are cheap.
I also think people don't want to pay a van or even use their free coupons (great idea by the way) to take everything to the Cargo Tram or take that TV to the shop-- because they are too lazy or they don't care or it is too expensive to rent a van to fit everything in (which is understandable and some people really can not afford) BUT there must be a way to deal with it instead of just dumping everything, anywhere.
At least the one that left the things there, put them all together and didn't spread them all over the street.
Anyway, I am pretty sure it is cheaper to rent a van or find any other solution...than to pay the CHF1000 fine...

Well if you recycle one will not need many bags. We usually use one 35L bag every 10 days for two persons. This makes 36 bags/year, that makes 61.20 CHF/year or 30.60 CHF/year per person. Even if you make double the amount of waste it will not cost a fortune. I think I have to agree with you, most of the times people are just too lazy...however, if I compare the situation here with my other home in Italy, we do not really have much of a problem with illegal garbage disposal...

Expensive, but compared to what? Other places like back home when the municipality pays from the local budget so that all can throw immense quantities of food, clothes and stuff they could have made a better use of in the first place? Or relative to our time?
Recycling requites a bit of an "effort" (actually more like being able to organise your stuff more efficiently) but it does pay off. And Switzerland really offers this possibility: to recycle. If one considers their time values more money than what they could save by just disposing of useless things at the designated places.. they will be paying more, simples. My time is valuable too.

Maybe she has a hand, elbow or shoulder injury, and cannot lift the lid, nor lift the bag to drop it in.
Perhaps you could ask her. If it is something like that, but she has not had the courage to ask for help, it might reassure her to know that you've noticed her need, and are happy to just pick up her bag for her and pop it in the bin.
