What househole critters are common in Fribourg and Vaud?

I'm moving from Texas where it's not uncommon to find rattlesnakes, copperheads, cottonmouths, field mice and raccoons in our back yard, despite living in an urban area. Everyone here does quarterly preventative yard/home treatments (if you care about your house) for the hoards of mosquitos we have the majority of the year, along with the termites, black widows, and roaches that like to come out in our warmer months. We also have harmless June bugs and mosquito hawks in early summer that like to gather on your porches.

So please tell me what to expect...what insects/reptiles/animals shall I see when I move to CH? Also, what needs to be done for the home in this respect (and what is illegal too...don't want to accidentally do something I'm not supposed to)?

Insects (of the non-lethal kind) and the odd slow worm.

Re: What househole critters are common in Fribourg and Vaud?

Cats, dogs, squirrels, sparrows, blackbirds, pigeons, robins, wrens, and fruit bats. Slugs, snails, and earthworms. In summer, midges and sometimes fruit flies. Small spiders.

I have heard that there are also foxes in the countryside, but I am yet to see one here. Have seen some big rats- interestingly, at the town.

Seriously, the reason you don't hear/find much about it, is because there is nothing to say. This is neither the US nor Australia where every animal is likely to bite or poison you or both.

You'll get mosquitoes, ticks (although to be fair these do carry Lyme's disease depending on the region http://www.zecken.ch/Karten/karten.html) and other biting flies like horse flies if you are near a farm.

Otherwise relax. This is not something you need to worry about here.

Re: What househole critters are common in Fribourg and Vaud?

A quick glance at the computer screen and I saw the thread title below this one, something to do with asos. And this thread, with househole critters.

So, naturally, my brain interpreted it as "What asshole critters are common in Fribourg.."

Fribourgers, hide your hamsters...

Ticks can be the cause of serious illnesses; otherwise not much to worry about.
Except the neighbours of course; and you are not allowed to shoot them

Re: What househole critters are common in Fribourg and Vaud?

Insects aren't a big problem - other than mosquitoes and ticks - because the wolves and bears, that come into the garden, in the still of night, tend to eat most of them ..... when they've run out of cats.

Humming bird moths can be particularly nasty, too.

There's quite a lot of foxes in town. Here in Lutry we see them quite regularly, but mostly at night.

Stone marten are common too, and can be quite deadly to your car...

We have around 6 different cats, a hedgehog, huge mosquitoes, wasps and loads of slugs in our garden. I hate wasps - they make it nearly impossible to eat outside in summer as one smell of food and they annoy you.

edit: we also have snakes but they look like big worms compared to the ones we have in Australia.

Re: What househole critters are common in Fribourg and Vaud?

a common bug spray will take care of anything in the bug department you might encounter in your house but as people have said, all harmless and small. cockroaches (nothing compared to the whoppers i'm used to) are tiny and hardly ever get to be a problem (unless you like leaving food sitting around for weeks which i am sure you don't). mosquitos and flies and other critters are around but their number and size hardly reach threatening proportions (as said, no comparison to say australia).

good idea to get clothes moth repellent in whatever form in your wardrobe etc.

always a good idea to use anti-tick spray if you are going to the forest (see what others have mentioned) as they may carry lyme disease or tick borne encephalitis (you can get immunised against the latter).

you might encounter the odd snake if you spend a LOT of time outdoors, in the alps, etc. but they are harmless and even the ones that do carry some venom you have loads of time to get to a doctor and have the bite looked at.

all in all animals here are very non-threatening.

Re: What househole critters are common in Fribourg and Vaud?

Don't listen to them above, its quite common to get Alpine Alligators, passing through in migration season, they can be quite tricky to get out of the garden and a little bitey. Another frequent guest are our Mountain lions we have a pride of them here in Oerlikon (just outside Zürich) they rummage around the bins at night making a god awful racket especially noisy in mating season late April to early May. Might I suggest bringing some sort of small assortment of weaponry to help dispatch the varmints as painlessly as possible, if you have silencers they would be handy as your neighbours could make official complaints if you need to discharge your firearm after 10pm or on Sundays.

Re: What househole critters are common in Fribourg and Vaud?

Not exactly a household critter in the strict sense of the term, our area (Heidiland, NE Switzerland) knows the Grääggi. That's kind of a goblin that lies in ambush near bars and other booze holes, attacking patrons on their way home after midnight.

The typical symptoms are waking up in the morning in a ditch with a head like a bee hive, often with icky stuff on one's clothes smelling like vomit, combined with a loss of most of the memory of the evening with chums.

The huge mosquitos mentioned above by CH_Me aren't mosquitos but crane flies (in certain English speaking countries a.k.a. daddy longlegs, but that's a frequent cause of confusion because a daddy longleg in the USA usually means a cellar spider, which, of course, can't fly). Crane flies do look like giant mosquitos but they don't bite. They are herbivores and totally harmless.

The snakes that "look like big worms," also mentioned by CH_Me, most likely are blindworms a.k.a. slowworms, actually a legless lizard species and completely harmless too. They make good prey for cats that are too slow to catch mice.

Those are the mosquito hawks mentioned in the OP's post. Widely believed to feed on mosquitos, though they don't.

Re: What househole critters are common in Fribourg and Vaud?

No one's mentioned Mai- and Juni-kafers, yet.
If you have fruit trees in the garden, then it's soon time for these little buggers to emerge, and come dusk, they will bomb and attack anything in the vicinity of the trees.

Completely and utterly harmless, but goddamn annoying in their persistence, but as soon as it's properly dark, they're gone .... till the next day.

..... and another one - what I call sticky bugs - a type of beetle, but with really clingy legs that seem to be able to attach to any surface, and often have to be tugged off skin, clothes and most other things.
