Wow. I thought the Church only accepts donations. this is something new.
So say for example if I EARN a gross of CHF 5000
and work in zurich, then what are the taxes i.e.
Montlhy Gross Salary: 5000/mth
Federal Tax: (%)
Canton Tax : (%)
Church Tax: (%)
Net Sal/Cash in hand.

Re: Need your kind advice on Job, Housing, Schooling etc.

Dear All,

Thank you so much for all your help. Made my decision making a little easier. So keeping in mind the confusion over High german and swiss german. I plan to learn french instead and visit Geneva. I will also drop by Zurich just to get a hang of it.

Lets hope for the best.

Re: Need your kind advice on Job, Housing, Schooling etc.

My advice is to buy a rail pass (for all the trains in Switzerland) before you get here, and spend your month's visit having a good look at both cities.

For example: http://www.sbb.ch/en/leisure-holiday...avel-pass.html
Swiss Travel Pass Flex
Non-consecutive days can be selected individually.
15 days within one month: CHF 484

AND
that you join www.couchsurfing.com
and build your profile carefully (by reading a lot of other profiles, you can learn how to do this), filling in each section, and showing yourself to be an interesting, interested man, and not looking too overly-scholarly and boring, reasonable, trustworthy and willing to learn new things and to share what you know, open for experiences. Then, go couchsurfing where you live now, and learn from those more experienced. Write references and ask them to do so.
Then read a lot of profiles in all the places you'd like to visit (Zurich, Geneva, Bern, etc.), and write personal requests to stay with them.
Once you have settled the arrangements with your hosts, post in the local couchsurfing pages of Geneva and Zurich, looking to meet people in your business field, for coffee and advice, and just to meet locals.
By doing this, you will immediately learn a lot from your hosts, and understand much more about life in Switzerland that if you stay in hotels or even in Bed-and-Breakfast places.

You allocated monthly rent For three people is really low. You'll struggle to find an appropriate apartment in the price range in Zurich. It's even more difficult in Geneva.

Re: Need your kind advice on Job, Housing, Schooling etc.

Andy, you are budgeting 1500 francs per month for a 1 bed apartment but you have a child. Where is the kid going to sleep? On the couch?

Also, 400 francs per month for groceries for 3 people is way too low unless you are all vegans.

I admire your attention to detail though, I must say.

Re: Need your kind advice on Job, Housing, Schooling etc.

Hi TheSpouse,

I'm of Indian origin and managed to get my portugal citizenship just recently. It may be odd for you however for an Indian its not. So no, he will not sleep on the couch, but with us in our bed thats how Indians make their kids feel loved.

Your next question may be, what about our married life?
Obviously we do maintain a healthy married life as everytime in bed becomes a little too boring, so we use other places in the apartment, it works for us

You did mention the cost of grocery is too little for non veg eatables however not the realistic price.

Would really appreciate if this forum can provide a realistic quote as well because the info I have collated in the list mentioned earlier in my post is based on different websites so not sure how recent/relevant they are, your watchful eyes can help me.

*Note: I just realized, if you copy the financials mentioned above and use excel's "Paste special feature" (tick UNICODE). The financial should show up just fine.

Rent deposit should be three months, not one, 400 for health insurance is too low, as are your estimates for public transport, energy and TV license.

That may be how you do it in India, but the Swiss have other ideas I'm afraid and may well want to see a separate bedroom for him as he's 8 years old. If they don't think your accommodation is "large enough by Swiss standards to accommodate the family" then they won't grant you the dependent's permits.

https://www.ch.ch/en/family-reunification/

Defining large enough tends to be a bit vague, but I've seen "number of people less one" mentioned as the formula for bedroom requirements here on the forum so for 3 people you'd need 2 bedrooms.

Use these websites to get a better idea of what you can afford. Note that kitchen/bathrooms don't get counted so a 2 room place means a living and a bedroom, 2.5 living/dining room and bedroom, 3 room could be living and 2 bedrooms or living, dining and 1 bedroom, 3.5 living/dining room and 2 bedrooms.

www.immoscout24.ch
www.immostreet.ch
www.homegate.ch
www.home.ch

I don't know much on the schooling side, but I doubt you'd find a school here offering Indian curriculums and on that salary there's no way you could afford to put him into such a school anyway. Most international schools are expensive. I would guess, as kids here are in kindergarten for a couple of years from age 4, that your child would be in grade 6 or 7 according to the Zurich International School website and that would cost CHF33,200 a year. And in Zurich he'll learn German, not French.

http://www.zis.ch/page.cfm?p=2454

Health insurance - ran a rough guesstimate (you 30, wife 27, child 8, standard insurance, deductibles CHF1,000 each, child CHF500) and the cheapest I've got off of comparis.ch is CHF672.60. Play around with the comparis website and see if any of the other health insurance options would be lower.

https://en.comparis.ch/krankenkassen...e-35e9cfbc73cc

Also how are you calculating your gross monthly salary? As 12 monthly payments or 13? Because a lot of Swiss companies pay a 13th so the yearly monthly figure would be lower: 6,250 for 12 months, but only 5,769 for 13.

Food - well have a look at the following websites and they'll give you an idea of prices for many items:

www.migros.ch
www.coop.ch
www.aldi.ch
www.lidl.ch
www.denner.ch

TV licence doesn't look too off to me St2lmans. We pay around 500 which would be just over 41 a month, but of course you can't pay monthly now as far as I know. We get a one off bill a year these days.

Re: Need your kind advice on Job, Housing, Schooling etc.

Thanks a lot Medea F. This is exactly the kind of info I wanted.

I have taken the lowest salary to checkout a worst case scenario anything above that would be my savings.
Also the salary is calculated for 12 mths again worst case as some companies can be stingy. Also thanks a lot for keeping me informed about the types of apartments and requirement for Dependants permit which is really important.

It's 40/month rather than 30, a 33% difference.

33% is a lot.

Also, I'd go for either the maximum franchise, or the minimum, but not 1k. I have the max, and my wife the min, for example. Kids I'd also keep at the minimum as they don't pay much until 18, at which point switch to the max.

I always take 70% of the gross salary to get a ball park cash in hand figure.

For expenses. I would say you should expect 4000-5000 per month. Less if you are putting in effort to live frugally.

For Outpatient services:
Out here in Dubai an individual pays around AED 2500 annually to subscribe to a health Insurance plan and when he visits a doctor he pay the following:
AED 10/20/50 per visit for doctors consultation
+ Diagnostic services availed (5% or 10% of the purchase value or sometimes free)
+ Purchase of medicine from pharmacy (5% or 10% of the purchase value or sometimes free)

In your post what are the deductibles your referring to.

Yes the deposit will be stored in a specific bank account in your name but you can't access as long as you live in the apartment. Once you move out and the landlord claims no damages etc it will be released and transferred to you.
