Also, I'd go for either the maximum franchise, or the minimum, but not 1k. I have the max, and my wife the min, for example. Kids I'd also keep at the minimum as they don't pay much until 18, at which point switch to the max.

Usually 10% is what we pay for medicines and most doctor's stuff. Bear in mind that the standard insurance at least doesn't cover dentist, optician, etc, though you might be able to add that on as a supplemental insurance.
