The beginning of the end for Geneva?

From the business community crying out aloud for more office space in the town centre and a reviewing of the taxes (whether I agree with it or not is another story) to the congestion, prohibitive rents, lack of space, no obvious effort to make the place look nicer (think how excited the local authorities were when they introduced...the yellow plastic bin liners!!), a shortage of decent and affordable hotels, the gross under exploitation of the navigation potential on the lake (instead of 100 years of debate on a bridge or a tunnel and still nothing), a poor treatment of public parks in the Summer (let's block it all with tacky fun fairs and remove all the benches) and the new legislation (still to be implemented) on the restriction of movement (88 non- EU work permits allowed this year in the canton??)...what is the vision and the future in store for Geneva, I wonder?

With ever increasingly aggressive tactics by Asian countries to attract big business, I get the impression that the local authorities are playing the "why change a recipe that's worked for so long" card.

I got a classic example of Genevan complacency when I tried to book boat tickets for the Rolle Steam boat parade next week end: the time table on line (once you've found it!) is at best "bizarre to comprehend", the pdf brochure on the event is scanned sideways and the woman on the phone was either stoned or in a "computer says no" mode! (God help me when I tried to mention the brochure scanned the wrong way...I may as well have sworn at her!)...and I speak French! I dread to think what someone with little French would have received as a "public service"!!

Whether you are in Arts, Business, Research and Education, a short term expat or long term resident, employer or employee, young or old, what, in YOUR view, would improve Geneva (if you think it needs improving).

No need PaddyG, you've got it all in Fribourg! Cheap(er) rents, fresh air, clean towns, Irish green grass and La Fondue Fribourgeoise! We cannot compete!

Cut it out and give it to France. It won't improve Geneva, but it'll look a lot better in comparison to the rest of France than it would ever do in comparison to rest of Switzerland.

When I was a lad, I always thought it looked glamorous and exotic - in an international espionage kind of way ..... was that just an illusion created by the magic of television?

Re: The beginning of the end for Geneva?

A little bit of the swiss-german mindset would help when it comes to cleanliness of the streets. More recycling bins in the residence area. A little bit of a "Welcome to Geneva, Switzerland" foreigner/expat/diplomat education to get them to the mindset of orderliness and respect of the culture.

And I hope they stop constructing ugly, modern, glass buildings in the city where there are lots of old and elegant buildings!

Oh and yes, traffic sucks big time!

IronAngle has made some interesting contributions
Re: The beginning of the end for Geneva?

Office space: There isn't much space in the centre, but I would develop the industrial area between Vernier and Meyrin to include business parks, like some cities have, with frequent bus connections to the airport which is only 5 minutes away.

Transport: Geneva could really use a metro. This would allow them to gradually remove the tramlines and buses from the congested city centre and station streets, thereby also providing some relief for congestion.

The lake needs a bridge or a tunnel, starting at the end of Eaux Vives and ending at the end of Sécheron with enough lanes to distribute traffic. This would also allow people to cross the lake without having to go over the dreaded Mont Blanc bridge.

Rents: Some of the outer areas could really be developed. Between Carouge and Veyrier there is a lot of open space with not much going on. Put some big buildings there with affordable accomodation and I guarantee that they will be occupied while the painting is still wet. It would bring some life to an otherwise dead area and lead to the building of supermarkets/shopping centres (more jobs) and schools in the area.

Public services: Get young people in there. The new generation has much better language and communication skills and are more tech-savvy

Back in the 50's and 60's perhaps, but these days Vienna and Prague are the fashionable rendevous cities for the typical espionage dead drop.

I heard it was because of the traffic problems, and that none of them liked speaking French anyway.

Re: The beginning of the end for Geneva?

Geneva - French speaking and cultural influences and a ****hole where getting things done is difficult.

Zürich - German speaking and cultural influences and a comparatively pristine paradise where everything just works.

Coincidence?

Re: The beginning of the end for Geneva?

Maybe we have no complaints? You know the CEVA is coming to sheep herd the frontaliers to their jobs. Saw a great big office space for rent available in Vernier opposite Corabois yesterday if you need one. Much better than being stuck in town. And if you had been lying down basking in the sun instead of sitting up, that pdf would have looked the right way round.

Re: The beginning of the end for Geneva?

Everyone talks about a bridge or a tunnel, but what about ferry crossings like they have in Zürich, Vierstäattesee? Or even a good re-thinking of CGN timetables that seem to serve Right Bank to Right Bank tourists, some commuters from Chens (France) to Nyon (forget compatible return timetables at the week end!) and everyone else in between is buggered!

Zurich is perfect, the problems generally lie with the expats inhabiting it.
