The cyclist from hell

I saw something bizarre this morning on my daily commute to the office in Geneva. The last 4 of 5 km before the Mont-Blanc bridge (Quai Gustave-Ador) is usually one big traffic jam. There is a cycling lane next to it which scooters use to get through to the traffic light. This is not allowed (fine: 125fr) but what's the point of going by scooter if you have to remain stuck behind the cars for 30 minutes. There are 40'000 scooters in Geneva on a daily basis, if they would all come by car it would add 160km to the traffic jams and nothing would move anymore.

Occasionally you have police, so it's funny to see everyone moving once the first one makes a move and the coast is clear. Most cyclists actually don't use the cycling lane as it is nicer to cycle next to the lake.

There's a good understanding with cyclists in general, most of them anyway are no better as they do not even stop for traffic lights at all.

However, there is one guy which I have seen now for the 3rd time who is consistently very militant. I talked to him once and he went on about how we should all cycle instead of being on scooters and being in his way (he goes faster than the scooters on the cycling lane and don't you dare slowing him down).

However today when I was waiting at the traffic light and seeing him talking to another "victim", I saw them having a big discussion as he is now actually filming with a small camera all the scooters that are committing offenses!! Never seen that in any other country...

Re: The cyclist from hell

Few days ago early morning I am driving near the 4 Seasons Hotel avenue on my bike and I see in front of me a large group of bikes all waiting on the back of the traffic jam. Wow I am thinking, this must be a moto group or gathering. Let me see who these guys are. As I come closer, I see all GE plates. Mmmm... Riiight in front of the bikes, I see 2 coppers on bikes too That's why no one was cutting in front or going on the sides.

We continued like that for 5 more minutes, everybody driving like on a parade.

As soon as coppers left, you could see scooters buzzing, harleys brrrrm on all sides to go in front

And, it doesn't matter that you are a scooter, you can't use the bike lane. Go and overtake from the left side (if line is not solid). Don't drive like a French. Buying a tatty scooter doesn't mean you shouldn't follow the rules.

This. And more this. They are called CYCLE lanes for a reason.

Re: The cyclist from hell

As both a cyclist and motorbike rider who commutes along that stretch I couldn't disagree more.

Almost every morning there are scooters and motorbikes in the cycle lane either slowing down the cyclists who are actually allowed to be there or worse driving right behind the slower cyclists and trying to overtake them. Unsurprisingly this means they are often riding right up the arses of the cyclists and would consequently be unable to stop if necessary.

With regards cyclists not using the cycle path... The first part from the bottom of the rampe de Vésenaz to the yacht club is pavé, so no good for cyclists. Then along to Porte Noir the pedestrian path is narrow and often has walkers/runners and would be very unsafe to cycle along. From Porte Noir there is the choice to go under the trees and not on the cycle lane, but the whole point of a cycle lane is to separate cyclists from both the motorised traffic and from pedestrians - if scooters are pushing cyclists out of the cycle lanes and forcing them to mingle with the pedestrians it isn't exactly clever is it?

I hadn't thought of using a camera but had considered requesting the police to get down there more regularly to control the dangerous scooter riders.

I've just bought a Jumbo Jet, so I demand every working day the traffic jam to clear in front of me so I can go to work quickly and not sit in traffic.

Thank you

OK. I will integrate better and bring a camera as well, so I can film all the cyclists and pedestrians not stopping at traffic lights. Instead of "driving like a French" I will start "acting like a Swiss". Great society. George Orwell will be proud.

All sarcasm aside, you should not aim your hate at the "tatty" scooters. We actually alleviate traffic issues in this city in a substantial way so all these scooter haters can still commute to the office by car in less than an hour instead of 3 hours.

That doesn't mean everything should be allowed of course but a bit of tolerance and pragmatism probably works best while we are waiting for infrastructure to be built (aha).

Re: The cyclist from hell

As a frequent cyclist, I am ashamed at how some of my fellow cyclists behave, as I am as a motorist and the way some of my fellow motorists behave.

However, I am not a scooter owner, so I think they're all twats .

You started this argument, you are the one that is in the wrong, don't try and deflect the blame by pointing fingers at others.

If everyone cycled there would be even less pollution and even less traffic jams. Why don't you try it sometime?

Pragamtism is all well and good, but as I already pointed out, the aggressive tactics of many of the motorised two-wheelers actually makes it more dangerous for the cylists and the pedestrians using that stretch, through no fault of their (our) own.

Re: The cyclist from hell

rules regarding motor vehicle and cycling traffic exist for an important reason - safety. at least once a month I drive by the scene of a motorcycle or scooter involved in a traffic accident during rush hour traffic, invariably because the rider has chosen to weave in and out of traffic without realizing that drivers of cars do not have eyes on all 4 sides of their head. a motorcycle or scooter driver that uses a cycling lane is not only breaking the law, he or she is putting multiple lives at risk.

Re: The cyclist from hell

It's a slippery slope, scooters drive in cycle lanes, then cyclists ride on footpaths, then something like this happens.. (DM, apologies for source)

I see, cycle lanes enable cyclists to beat the traffic? I always thought it was to separate them from the motorised traffic for safety reasons.

How wrong could I have been?

Re: The cyclist from hell

Motorbikes and scooters are not allowed in a cycle lane because it's dangerous. If you for any reason touch a car at low speed the worse that can happen is a dent in the car and / or a bruise on you but if you touch a cyclist even driving very slowly there is a very good chance of you both getting tangled and falling down.
In heavy traffic driving on the left side between lanes is:
1. much safer
2. much faster (no cyclist in front of you slowing you down)
3. illegal

But point 3 can be ignored since driving on a cycle lane is illegal too.

Thing is, it takes a little more balls to drive between lanes with cars on your left and right than to invade a cycle lane full of soft-looking cyclists...
