French language learning experience sharing

I wonder if anyone, who is comfortable with french language now but did not speak any before they moved over to Europe, can share their learning experience with me.

I do not speak french, and find their sound/phonetic completely new/different. I have tried to watch the french TV and could not figure out the least of what was going on, even with their hand gestures and facial expressions.

I simply want to learn to understand other people so that I can get the most out of staying in Swtizerland.
