Seeking advice on kitchen sink drain

Can anyone advise us on what's going on with our kitchen sink drain?

Our kitchen drain seems to run pretty smoothly. But once in a while, while we are doing the dishes, we hear a pump near the dishwasher kicking in. Can anyone explain what's happening in such a case? At one point, dirty water came back up into our sink. We've used chemicals to unblock it but it doesn't change much.

The part that bothers me most is the smell of sewer coming from the cupboard area under our sink. Sometimes, even the inside of our dishwasher smell.

Any advice would be much appreciated!

My first thought is a neighbour runs their dishwasher, and you are hearing it.

Or, if you leave the dishwasher switched on, it will sometimes run the pump to empty any water, which was disturbed while you were using the sink.

To avoid the smells, you need to make the water trap under the sink deeper, and for that you might need a DIY man or a plumber.

you possibly don't have a non-return valve in your sink outflow which would provide an isolation from the dishwasher for you.

have you run a cleaning cycle on the dishwasher too?

We almost never use the dishwasher (just once a month) and this seems to be a recent problem. Could I tell the regis to send a plumber? I just worry that s/he would come and the problem would (naturally) not manifest itself.

Thanks! Would a cleaning cycle be different from just a regular cycle? (Apologies if this is a dumb question. We don't use the dishwasher often and the dishwasher function seems very basic. (Just a button to select the temperature and "start")
