Can I kill my cow on my lawn?

Yes. A framer in canton of Zurich got permission to slaughter his cows on the pasture. He says it is less stressful for the animal than the transport to the slaughterhouse (which may legally take up to 6 hours in Switzerland). The article says the farmer will use a Kleinkalibergewehr (a .22 rifle). From short distance into the head to stun the animal. The method is already in use on several farms in Germany. The Swiss animal welfare organization Schweizer Tierschutz is not so fond of it. They say the risk that the killing goes wrong his too high and in this case the animal will suffer more than in a slaughterhouse.

Here the other EF classic thread: Cost of buying a COW in Switzerland

Re: Can I kill my cow on my lawn?

I read this article in the Tagi this morning as well and, actually, I think the idea is extremely good (albeit only for small-scale slaughter). The cows remain in their own herd, they're in a familiar and comfortable environment and it's quick and professionally done. Where's the problem? It'd rather eat meat from a happy, healthy, organically fed dead cow than from one that's been stressed around before being knocked-off.

And he's not doing it on his lawn - it's a farm !

The farmer in question knows exactly what he's doing and the welfare of his animals is of paramount importance to him.

as long as you shout "it's coming right for us" before shooting, it's allowed.

If you don't have a nagging conscience about this issue, then what kind of other types of slaughter to you feel acceptable in a modern society?

I don't accept this butchering as our inalienable right as humans to kill where we see fit.

One day (hopefully soon), others will also see the light.

Re: Can I kill my cow on my lawn?

But, can I do a halal slaughter of my cow on my lawn?

Sounds like I can, as the cow is only stunned by the 0.22 head shot.

Re: Can I kill my cow on my lawn?

Here in my Canton, this is only allowed if the cow is in great pain and too sick to be transported to the slaughter house, and requires special permission. A special mask and stunning gun has to be used and it has to be done by a qualified butcher/slaughter person. This happened in the fild at the back of us twice since we've been here, with cows which had a broken pelvis (1 due to accident, another due to gibing birth to a calf too large). A farmer here would not be allowed to slaughter in his field as a routine at all- only in extreme case and with the proper procedure adhered to.

Most farms are surrounded by other houses and communities. Local farmers have 100s of cows and horses in fields all around us, that would mean that children and all would have to witness this on a regular basis right in front of their eyes, day in, day out. That would certainly be the fastest and best way to promote vegetarianism, that is for sure.

When the 2 cows were slaughtered, I was so relieved because seeing them suffer was awful- they should have been put down earlier actually.

See yourself, a video how it is done.

If you eat beef and think that is disturbing, better stop eating it and become a vegetarian right now. Meet means an animal has to die, that is the reality.

That's because you live in a backwards, hill-billy canton, rather than a modern, animal friendly one.

Re: Can I kill my cow on my lawn?

I grew up on a small farm. The butcher would come to our house, shoot the cow, slit open and empty its guts onto a pile in the field, cut off the head to be used at our leisure and take the rest to be processed according to my parents specifications.

All went well until they butchered Mary Ann, my pet cow. Ginger was in the field watching and I was in my room crying. After that, I never made friends with our cows again.
