Voluntary Work in Zurich

Hello Everyone,

I would like to ask you for some organizations where I can make voluntary work (besides Red Cross)? Until I don't have a job I would like to be more active.

My german is not bad, but it's not perfect.

I hope that you can give me some tipps.

Thank you

Best

Caramel Viola

Your local SPITEX will always be looking for people willing to take people to doctors, hospitals and so on.

Re: Voluntary Work in Zurich

Caramel, what are your interests, what skills do you have to offer?

A volunteer needs to feel passionate about the cause, needs to share the organization's mission, needs to agree with the way the organization is structured and goes about it's work.

So... if you give us some more information about you, about the kind of groups you would like to support, we could perhaps come up with suggestions that are a good fit.

One thing to understand, though. Much of the work that is typically done by volunteers in other countries is done by professionals in Switzerland, and one often needs specific education to fill even volunteer roles.

There still are organizations where an open heart and willing hands are all that is needed, but one often needs to look a little further especially if your German is not yet functional. Don't get discouraged if the types of organizations where you would have volunteered back home are not interested in your help, just keep looking.

Also consider volunteering with some of the organizations led by, and geared towards, foreigners. These tend to be more responsive to offers of volunteer help from newly arrived folks.

Also consider volunteering with an organization in Germany (assuming you can travel) or with one here whose primary work is done abroad.

But as above, a bit more info will help us help you.

Good on ya for wanting to get involved, and best of luck to you.

As Melancollie already mentioned, you might find it difficult to volunteer for certain organisations. Depending on your education/skills, if that doesn't function you can give free maths/science/language lessons for those who need them and can't afford paying for them.

Hi, have you already found a place to volunteer? I am interested as well to do some work during the summer.

Or you could go and ask at the Gemeinschaftszentrum (community center). You'll find them here http://www.gz-zh.ch/.
GZ Loogarten for example is always looking for volunteers helping in the cafeteria. There, you'll meet lots of people :-) See here http://www.gz-zh.ch/gz-loogarten/engagement/?tx_zgz[uid]=103
