TIO - This is Oerlikon

More of a rant than a serious thread, but I've been in Sternen Oerlikon for almost a year now and it's worse than my experience in Athens...

After about a month moving in, some dimwit stole a nice Cannondale bike I had - a bike that by the way I got from someone in here 2 years ago... One of the last ones to be made in the US, great paintjob from the factory, I was really bummed, but I said WTF move on and forget about it.

Then spring came, my gf wanted a bike again, so a friend gave her his after he left CH. 3 weeks later bike was stolen. The last one was a nice aluminium Cannondale, this one was a complete POS city bike, nothing special really. I understand the Cannondale being stolen, why would anyone go and try to break/cut/pick a heavy lock for a POS bike?

And yesterday afternoon I took the bike for a short ride and I realised that my blue L sign was missing. Well I say missing, I mean broken. Thank god they didn't break anything else I suppose, that's where it's come to... Thanking our lucky stars for not having our stuff completely vandalised

And don't even get me started on the parades of drunk schoolkids strolling at the wee hours shouting and doing stupid shit like taking foldable chairs and sitting on the sidewalk for a smoke and a drink or whatever...

And the police station is like 5 blocks away.

I lived in the shithole of a city that Athens is for 7 years, and I never got stolen anything or had any problems. Yes personal experiences, and yes in general ZH is much better, I'm not an imbecile, but let me vent, will ya?

In Athens if you were strolling afterhours in a neighbourhood shouting and bullshitting around, the police might not come, but if anyone would bother, you would definitely get your head kicked in...

If the apartment wasn't that nice, and my gf didn't love the location like she does, there's no chance in hell I'd stay any longer. Oh how I miss freaking Leimbach...

Re: TIO - This is Oerlikon

I worked for a company at Thurgauerstrasse 40 for 10 years, and I never heard of rowdy behaviour around there. Maybe times have changed?

It sounds like you need a lock up garage.

Very sorry to hear that. My bike was stolen also. However, given it was locked, it was insured. You should check whether the household insurance covers the damage. Hope you luckier with the bike to come.

Re: TIO - This is Oerlikon

was your L a plastic one? It could have been broken off by some road crap.

and get a decent lock for your bike. I have one in Lachen that I locked up 5 years ago and it hasn't moved

So in Oerlikon bikes are stolen often? I was planning to buy a not expensive but decent bike...probably it's better to buy the cheapest second-hand bike I will find

Well they can be stolen anywhere really...
My boyfriend has lived in Oerlikon (near Berninaplatz) for over 20 years now and he's never had his bike stolen. It's a pretty expensive mountain bike. In summer he usually leaves it outside so he doesn't have to go into the garage.
But yeah, I guess that's risky Just don't let it stand in plain sight next to the street.

I don't know exactly where the OP is but Berninaplatz is a different area to the Oerlikon towards Seebach. North of Bahnhof Oerlikon and I definitely wouldn't ride an expensive bike. My office is in the area and sometimes I had to do night work, and it becomes an interesting place after dark.

OP says Sternen Oerlikon. That's just 2 tram stations away from Berninaplatz (about 4min).
I personally don't get the feeling it's that bad there, then again, I'm not there too often. But I used to live in Langstrasse, compared to that, everything else seems harmless

Yep, missed that about Sternen Oerlikon, you would think it would be ok around there.
