Re: underground nuclear complexes open to public?

The only underground man made thingy open to public in Vaudlais is the Bex salt mine. There is no underground nuclear facility that I am aware of in Valais.

But most nuclear power plants in Switzerland have a visitor center.

Not a nuclear power plant but nearly as powerful (for a short time), and in Valais, is the Grande Dixence Dam.
Here the visitor information:

Bex (the village) and its salt mine are in Canton Vaux, not Valais. From an American point of view it may be just around the corner, but in Switzerland that's a different world.

Re: underground nuclear complexes open to public?

I've spent most of my career around radiation and nuclear power and I find nuclear (atomic) tourism to be very interesting.

http://www.mnn.com/lifestyle/eco-tou...pical-vacation

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Atomic_tourism

I appreciate the technical aspects of these sites, but it is the underlying political, scientific and moral philosophies which they represent that to me is the real fascination.

http://youtu.be/CNNMiSEZd9Y

Maybe it's because my father was the CD engineer for our city (which happened to be a primary NORAD location) and as a child, I remember participating in multiple drills (duck and cover!) and visiting all the local bunkers to check supply levels (tins of glucose and army rations). The house bunkers here in CH remind me of home.

Nice list. It is missing one of the most interesting but also one of the most safest site. It is the inside the reactor building of nuclear power plant.

Yes I was referring to the underground nuclear shelter complexes Switzerland is a bit famous for.

I was told by a Swiss that some had been opened up to the public but judging by the responses here I am now thinking she was mistaken....

Each building should have a nice bunker. Are you referring to those?

not sure if they are nuclear proof installations like the ones you can visit in UK but
http://www.crestawald.ch/ and Festung.ch are artillery bunkers along the borders

There's this one in Luzern: http://unterirdisch-ueberleben.ch. It has tours in German and in English. I haven't been yet myself (only heard about it a few days ago) but definitely plan to. Seems like a perfect outing for a rainy day.

My friend has a large underground nuclear complex. I'll check if he's accepting visitors.
