Shopping online

Hi all,

I am new to this forum and is currently interning in one of the human rights organisation in Geneva as a summer law associate. I have a question.

I have read a lot of comments by people who have purchased items from amazon (UK/Germany) saying that they have been charged extra taxes for their items and I have just purchased a pair of reading glasses on "amazon.de" (I forgot to bring from Singapore) for less that 5 Swiss Francs, will I be charged for the "extra taxes or VAT" too?

Thanks in advance

Re: Shopping online

If I'm not wrong, you only have to pay the VAT if it exceeds 80CHF

Re: Shopping online

If value is below 300sfr customs will not matter, unless:
Items are taxed (alcohol, tobacco and others).
If the internetshop leaves custom declaration to DiePost you will be charged between 25 and 30 sfr from DiePost for doing that and of course custom taxes for items listed above.

On the upside you might be able to get back the Mehrwertsteuer (VAT) if you ordered from a country with a higher VAT than switzerland. Although many shops nowadays already take this away from your bill in advance (amazon germany i.e.).

In your particular case, no you will not be charged further than your bill and will not get VAT difference back since it has already been ajusted.

Re: Shopping online

Forget the 300 chf, these are only valid if you bring goods yourself cross border .

From my experience it is about CHF 50.- what you can order tax free and get shipped. Freight costs are counted as well.

On Ch.ch there are more details ...
