Gym - one that isn't too expensive?

Hi all,

I am relocating to Zurich in September this year.

Any recommendations for a decent gym to join that isn't too expensive? Ideally would be a central location near a tram stop.

Many thanks!

Re: Gym - one that isn't too expensive?

We go to Active Fitness, they have various gyms in and around Zurich. Not too expensive, but of a nice standard. Ok, they don't have the large pool, etc, but they have a sauna and classes are included.

And you can always put me down on your application as I recommended you

Thank you! Shame the website isn't available in English!

Is this the correct one?

I go to EasyFit which is at the stop Seebacherplatz. Costs me 500 a year.

Cheapest ive seen in Zurich so far (Im not a student so I cant reap the free benefits of ETH University gym). If you are a student that would be your option.

Definitely!

The trick is to then claim the expenses on your insurance (providing your insurance covers fitness centre expenses)...

My understanding is that the ASVZ offers paying membership for 500.- per year to any alumni of a Swiss or foreign university.

Although some of the guys at the counter deny it (for ex. Fluntern), their website states this quite clearly: http://portal.asvz.ethz.ch/english/Seiten/Alumni.aspx

If you live near an ASVZ gym this may be a good option, but! you will have to put up with students. This may or may not be a disadvantage to you.

If you get some premium addons from Swica, they will pay for your gym.

Re: Gym - one that isn't too expensive?

To add to transeuropeancheese's note about ASVZ- I was able to join at a slightly lower rate 400CHF I believe, after showing evidence that my husband was employed at ETH. There are plenty of students, but also plenty of older adult professors, employees, etc. The equipment is dated, but there are many excellent classes 7 days a week at the Polyterrasse location near Central. Some of the facilities at Polyterrasse were recently refurbished last year.

Hi;

I've signed up for the Asia Spa, which is located in Sihlcity. I pay 109 CHF per month and to my understanding it is one of the few that allows you to pay in a monthly basis instead of the whole year as an advanced payment.

Cheers

Re: Gym - one that isn't too expensive?

The best deal I've found so far is at BaseFit. I paid @ 800 CHF for a 2-year subscription. The gym itself is excellent but you pay extra for things like showers, drinks, etc. However, for a great place to work out at a bargain price, this is an excellent place.

Re: Gym - one that isn't too expensive?

I guess it will mainly be based on what type of training you are looking to do

functional training / free weight training - then you probably will pay slightly more money as you have a more limited choice

cardio based machine training - could probably find a cheap deal as most gyms have these as basics

Hi all,

The choice of gym depends on your needs.

I've been going to Activ Fitness for almost 5 years. It's a nice, bright gym with new machines and a few screens to watch telly while you sweat it out.

But it's not a gym I recommend for bodybuilders. Free weights are adequate but not plentiful so it gets crowded during peak hours. Likewise, weight training machines are also often crowded. The instructors are good, friendly and I have no complaints. I have made many friends at the gym over the years, members and instructors included.

The thing I really like about them is that you get all kinds of people there; young, old, middle aged, female, male, wealthy, not so wealthy, etc.

Another big advantage is that they have numerous locations that you can frequent without extra expense. This helps when you work in another town from where you live or when you are elsewhere in Kanton Zürich. They are predominantly in this Kanton but are spreading throughout Switzerland.

Showers and sauna are included as are group classes.

Price per year is reasonable and I recommend them.

I know that they have quite a few locations close to tram stops and public transportation. Stauffacher & Oerlikon for example.
