Opinions about Glattpark from people with small children

Hello All,

We are planning to move to Glattpark soon and we have a 3 year old daughter. We are looking for opinions about Glattpark from families in a similar situation i.e., small children.

1. I understand that the kindergarten is a bit far away (~ 800 m). How bothersome is that ?
2. Do your children have enough activities to do there ?
3. Are there enough German speakers in the area ? What is the approximate swiss/foreigner mix ?
4. Are there many families with children in the area ? When we visited it was raining and unfortunately we did not get an idea of how many families live there.
5. How bothersome is the airplane noise ? I found it a bit strong but I wonder if one gets used to it quite quickly ?

Thanks for the replies.

Glattpark area I would say not best for families. Oerlikon or further out, Baden can be OK for 2 years, get to know the area then move where you want to settle before your child starts school.

Re: Opinions about Glattpark from people with small children

I don't have kids but I live in Glattpark, so while I can't answer all your questions I can give you my thoughts on some.

There are a lot of swings, slides, etc throughout Glattpark so kids have lots of places to play. I see kids outside all the time playing alone, and there seem to be a lot of them. The big lawn next to the lake also provides a place for games/activities that require more space.

The airplane noise is something I was very concerned with before I moved - my previous apartment had absolutely no noise (the only noise was a bus going through every 15 minutes) but it turned out to be fine. With the window closed we hear almost no noise, and I have no problem sleeping. I've grown accustomed to it by now so I can easily sleep with the window open as well without waking up when planes start going by at 6AM or so. Another source of noise is frogs, they can make quite a racket I can hear them in the distance but they're not very close to my apartment, so they don't bother me.

For the last year there's also been construction work on a new apartment building right across the street from our bedroom and the sound is well insulated enough that not even that really bothered us. We could hear some rumbling from the airplanes and the construction work, but not enough to be a problem - just the occasional sound that goes through when they used certain types of louder equipment, or an airplane passed closer than usual.

We've been here for a little over a year and a half and don't plan to move any time soon.

So if you're particularly sensitive to noise and need absolute quiet to rest it might not be the best area to live, but otherwise it should be OK.

I work there and the noise is only particularly bad when the A380 flies overhead. Otherwise there's a ton of construction noise but that'll end someday, theoretically. I like the sound of the frogs.

Hi ipsiety, welcome to the area, I can't help with all questions you have, but will do my best:

1. Don't know, no kids yet
2. There's a lot of green space, a lake, playground etc etc. If they are a bit older and into organised sport, FC Oerlikon's pitches are not far away, maybe 5 mins on a bike or less. There's also the big swimming pool out that way by the Hallenstadion.
3. Everyone I've met so far is Swiss...whether you count that as German speaking is up to you :-p
4. Not too sure, haven't noticed anything other than a normal mix so far, so I guess so.
5. I honestly don't notice it now, I don't think that many planes go directly overhead and during 'sleeping hours' you have the Flugverbot anyway.

Hope that helps a bit.

1) private car traffic in Glattpark is restricted and limited so that 800 meters are not so much really (comparable to what I had in my 1st year of kindergarten)
2) for children there are lots of activities around the lake (the small artifcial one nearby)
3) there is a CH majority, which means that together with Germans and Austrians, the German Speakers dominate
5) I live a Kilometer closer to the Airport, but the planes become more and more silent .... the noise from buses and motorbikes is far more evident
-.-.-. Glattpark however is still in the making ... the planners tried and try to link it up with Glattbrugg and Opfikon, but the quarter in the end may turn towards Oerlikon-Seebach, and rather towards Glattbrugg then towards more traditional Opfikon
