Churches gone mad in Thalwil (bell tolling)???

Ok, does anyone have a clue what on earth is going on in Thalwil?

Seems like a hoard of demented bell ringers have descended on the village, tolling the bells at the most curious of times and going on for ages, waning and waxing in loudness!
And no, it's not just the bells telling you the time either (which up until now I've hardly heard at all).

Amazing. You are the first one complaining about it on this forum.
It must be you.

Re: Churches gone mad in Thalwil (bell tolling)???

Yes K and E, I've read those posts too.
But going from no bell ringing for weeks since living here to this "free for all ring your bell at whatever time" fest is a bit strange. I would say even for Swiss standards. Normally there isn't even the tolling to tell the time here...hence my Q.

Hi Roegner,

I thought that too, but it is so random, I started to form the demented bell tollers as a theory ;-).

Re: Churches gone mad in Thalwil (bell tolling)???

6 a.m. Hey farmers! You should have been milking an hour ago.
9 a.m. Sorry, farmer's wife. The daily visiting bread van has just left.
11 a.m. Bells. Farmers, hurry up a bit - lunch will be on the table at 12.00 prompt
4 p.m. Bells. Farmers -.where are you? Zvieri is ready.
6 p.m. Farmer's kids - you'll have to knock off helping Dad with the cows now. Time to help me water the garden.

Any other time is anyone's guess. They have to ring loud and long so that the farmers can hear them over the sound of the cowbells. And of course, the farms might be out in the country a long way from the Thalwil church!

My mom (along with a bunch of other school kids) helped to pull up those bells during the 1940s after they had to rebuild the tower after a fire in May 1943.

Just got the info that the Protestant Church in Zürich Wollishofen has started to ring the bells at night AGAIN, as People complained against the stop of the bell ringing. This coincides with the Establishment of a ORGELZENTRUM in the big church

That is so stupid my head hurts just thinking about it... who in their right mind would complain against bells not ringing at night? The mind boggles.

All church bells are rung by automated mechanisms - have never seen or heard of people pulling ropes.

I believe men were banned, because it seemed to be attracting the 'wrong' sort, as nearly all analogists were considered to be more camp, than holy.

Of course, sometimes the automatic mechanisms do go haywire with -er interesting results. In the middle of our church service last week, our bells must have decided that it was too hot and that swinging gently to and fro would cause a cooling breeze. Right in the middle of the service it was ding-dong, ding-dong for ages.

Same in Market Harborough where we have a flat next to the Church, and many other UK towns. 28 bells just for midnight alone! And 1h30mins + of bell ringing practice one or twice a week in the evening.
