Are you still talking to me? I haven't been a foreigner here for over 46 years. I prefer the word 'alien' and on paper I'm Swiss.
Just generally speaking. Is foreigner a bad word or is that just personal preference? I didn't mean to offend.

Even for being a butcher, he'd have to learn how to spell entrecôte correctly. He wrote it with ê instead of ô earlier in the thread #22.
Haha damn I knew i should've looked that up. I mix them up sometimes.

Not unlike the butcher's wife who sat on the bacon slicer. The butcher got behind with his orders - boom boom...

She was only the butcher's daughter, but she lay on the slab and said filet.

After 45 years in Switzerland and six years on EF ( some of that as a Moderator) it takes more than that to offend me.
At the time when I regularly spoke English with native English speakers, 'foreigner' was, at least by implication, negative. I like using 'alien' as it also means, or meant ' different'. Many Swiss only know the word as 'Ausserirdischer' a little green man. That's me all over.

Actually I tossed up between the reply I wrote and a second version:
"Be a good lad and check out my profile on here will you".

How long does one have to have lived in Switzerland before being allowed to lord it over newbies?

Since when do you capitalize nouns in French ? Keep it for German, thx.
High German does not keep the French accent circonflexe in Entrecote. At least not in Germany's German.

zimThuet is in Aargau - it was on the German side of the Röstigraben last time I looked.

He tried the French word and failed, I corrected.
You tried the German word and... well, see above.

I think it's usually written as "Entrecôte" east of the Röstigraben, capitalised with accent circonflexe.

In High German ist not called Entrecôte but Zwischenrippensteak.

The use of Entrecôte in German is a Helvetism.

Therefore it is appropriate to use the Swiss German spelling, which has the circonflexe.

The circumflex was retained in Aargau following the French occupation and the 1843 Treaty Of Frick. As witnessed by Dougal's Breakfast's Uncle Bertrand.

In Aargaudeustch its called the Cirkônweissensôckenflexlichhrrchhzz, after the third Archduke of Mellingen an der Aare who after defeating the Luzerners at the battle of Bipperlisi am Oberentfelden was affectionally given that nickname by his troops.

But I'm sure that Dougal's Breakfast (or maybe Wollishofener) can fill us in on the details.

das Entrecote ist perfectly German, thank you.
Check Duden next time you want to correct a native speaker in his own language. Spend your energy correcting my English, that's the only reason I am on EF in the first place.

Edit: oh, a groan for speaking my native languages correctly, nice! I promise to make as many mistakes as you, dear haters, you know this country and its languages so much better than I do... and of course red reps with a big fat lie and personal accusation, good old haters don't change even after being warned by the moderators... The rude one accuses the other of rudeness is enough to get away with it.

That's exactly what I'm doing.

I'm teaching you the correct English way to quote German and French.

I gave up learning English a looong time ago...I'm at peace with the idea that my English will always be horrific. That makes me wonder why I'm here then....it's just because EF can be very addictive.

I can see quite a few mistakes in English in EF messages now, so I am very happy with the result of my EF years. But I obviously should leave German and French to Besserwisser, being native and teacher is not good enough for EF. Fine by me, I am not the one in need of German and French lessons.

What is wrong with you Faltrad. Really! It's not what you say, it's how you say it. This is not a grammar thread, it started out with rubbish and looks like it's ending with rubbish.

Thank you for confirming that I am right. Onth "how", I am far spfter than rhe people who have insulted me all those years and I just reacted to the butcher joke. In writing, the tone gets lost, so people who WANT to see in my post an arrogant arsse rather than the smiling legere guy that I am do find an excuse to groan and ridicule me, but it's all in their heads, don't fix with the writer a problem that the reader has. Confirmation bias is a powerful thing...
Love,
