Anybody having problems with ZKB maestro cards?

So I checked for other posts on ZKB problems with credit/debit cards, and I think this is new:

For the last few years (2-3) I have to change my maestro card (from ZKB) every few months. After first couple of changes I asked each time if they have a reported problem with the cards' quality, and they always replied not, must be me storing the card at the wrong place or using it abnormally so it gets damaged. Everytime they replace my card I pay for it, plus the inconvenience of several days without being able to withdraw cash (if I need it, have to do it from Visa and pay the commission or go to the desk and waste working time due to overlapping opening hours etc). It is really disruptive. Also, it is not an absolute fail, it fails in 80% of the 'bankautomats' from ZKB and to a lower extent on the card readers at shops. You can imagine the face loosing situation in shops where VISA is not accepted and the maestro doesn't work, I have to apologize and give back the purchase, sometimes a full shopping trolley!

Last time my maestro card went inoperative (3 month ago) I was told by one of the ZKB's employees at my 'filiale' that actually they had had several problems lately with maestro cards and that they were looking into solving that, and recommended to change again the card.

I did it, and again the same problem. It can not be my problem, I've tried everything, from using flexible to hard cases for the maestro card, storing it in different wallets and purses, not compressing them but giving them space so they are more lousy (I recognize some time ago I used to carry an almost exploding purse), also changing the shops where I usually buy to see if it was any reader damaging my cards upon continuos use. Nothing, the card is again failing, I just can not think what else to try. I listened and tried all the tips that the bank employees gave me.

Is anybody in the Zurich - Thalwil area having the same problem? I am starting to think that actually they have an ongoing problem, not solved, but for osme reason they don't recognize. The employee that took the telephone this time told me that she was not aware about any ongoing problem, and when I mentioned the information from her colleague she said she was not aware about such problems on card.
I asked the bank to take the commission for a withdrawal I had to make this morning from my VISA, after wasting 30 minutes in the search of different cash machines, none worked. They commented they would call me, still waiting.

I am really considering moving to a different bank, since this situation seems unsolvable. I was for a couple of years with UBS, before switching to ZKB, with no problems. It is a pity, since I am extremely happy with the service and rest in this bank, but I find no way out of this issue.

Is this an isolated problem of mine or is there more people with this failing debit cards in ZKB?

Thanks for sharing!

Re: Anybody having problems with ZKB maestro cards?

I have had a maestro from them for 2 years (issued 2013), no problems so far.

However, a friend of me reported similar problems with her maestro card from ZKB. She replaced it 3 times and then switched to CS.

Re: Anybody having problems with ZKB maestro cards?

I've had to replace several maestro cards and every time ZKB wanted to charge me but i protested succesfully and they refunded the charge. I basically told them that if the quality of teh card was so shoddy as to not survive normal usage, that was their problem and not mine. So far I got away with it every time.

Having said that, I have noticed some ATMs are more tolerant than others (maybe they are older or maybe newer models). So I try to use those ATMs whenever I can. This has led to some strange situations, for example on the mezzanine at Zürich HB where there are two ATMs side by side but I know only the one on the left accepts my card. I have found myself queing for the one on the left many time although there was nobody at the one on the right, and people asked why I didn't go there.

Same here, I have a couple friendly ZKB ATMs in my radar, but one lost the magic this time, I think they may have updated the hardware.

Re: Anybody having problems with ZKB maestro cards?

Have you tried one of those special anti-static cases for your card? Sorry do not know where to buy them. I had a similar problem with UBS and they gave me one such case and the card was fine ever after.
Might be a pair of shoes or a carpet or something that is generating static?

Re: Anybody having problems with ZKB maestro cards?

Yes there is a problem.

Some 18 months ago my ZKB Maestro card kept being rejected at various terminals. They told me my card had been damaged and replaced it - and charged me CHF25 and recommend a plastic cover to avoid future damage.

Then just 3 months ago the replacement card, always kept in its little plastic folder did the same - at my local ZKB branch's ATM.

This time they told me there was a known problem with the magnetic strip on the wide strip versions. They then supplied my with yet another new card with narrow band at no charge...

Hope this helps.

Re: Anybody having problems with ZKB maestro cards?

I have an issue abroad with my maestro card from ZugerKB, in some shops it works and in others it doesn't. Quite embarrassing when it happens, because I have to go and find a cash machine, then return and pay.

It is a semi transparent plastic folder. Looks like the cases that new computer memory is supplied in if you ever bought any?

See picture!

Re: Anybody having problems with ZKB maestro cards?

Does the magnetic strip even have a function these days? Hasn't that largely been replaced by the chip, with the magnetic strip just fulfilling compatibility issues with the small number of devices that haven't been upgraded yet?

Re: Anybody having problems with ZKB maestro cards?

are ZKB cards also made by Trüb? (little logo on the back) - as my UBS one has failed on me on several occasions. I'm on card 6 at this point...

None at all. But then I don't personally possess a ZKB maestro card!

Yes, the Trübb logo is there! Good hint. I ll feedback this, perhaps they go and try a different provider if many people complains.

It is amazing all the people saying that cards were replaced at no cost etc. I tried, and they told me its my fault probably. Perhaps the service from my filiale is not as good as I considered it

Hi there, had exactly the same problem and got enraged when they kept telling me that I should keep the card away from my mobile and magnets and blabla. Argued that all my other cards were up to it. Well they gave me one of these envelopes but in the end I simply changed bank!

Hi again,

I finally complained, as many pointed out here, and got the card changed at no cost too.

Card manufacturer is new. Up to now the cards came from the same old provider (or so they tell me) and they kept failing. The new card reads "NagraID" at the reverse side.

At the moment I've been using it full load without problems, but it has been only a few weeks (since previous post). Will send a note if it fails again.

Anyway, I think it took really toooooo long to solve (if solved!)
