Be aware you will not fly 320 family and other types combined. . It's 1 or the other.

The 18 month training is a contract. During the training you do not get paid and you MUST work the following 2 years for them full time, after that you can consider either working part time or finding another airline.
You do however get very expensive training for free.

No. It is not free. You HAVE to work for them for 2 years, like it or not. They do, one way or the other, amortize their investment.

Compared to the alternative, which is pay for your own training and licenses, then work at a flight school or somewhere else to grind out enough flight hours to get noticed (and pay back your training fees) - yeah its still a good deal. It limits your up front, out of pocket expenses and you have a slot waiting for you.

Exactly. These deals are sought after. No up front training costs and a guaranteed position with a scheduled airline. So you have to work for them for two years.. that's your aim, no? Beats a friend of mine who paid for all his own training, his own type rating with no job guarantee and is now flying for Ryanair.

Agreed. It is not free but it is of course the very best way to get started in the aviation world as one gets a guaranteed job position afterwards and immediately starts collecting flight time.

Re: Continue at ETH or become pilot at SWISS?

Why ask a bunch of strangers about such an important decision?

Flying is either in your heart or it isn't. If you've spent your life reading comic books like Buck Danny and Biggles, redesigned Lego kits to represent a stealth bomber and had plastic airplanes hanging down from your bedroom ceiling then you know which way to go.

If you're serious about flying and wanting to watch sunsets from a privileged space in the sky, watch electrical storms from way above and peer through heavy rain searching for the approach lights, then go live your dream.

But if you think that staring at a screen and blogging about a new performance upgrade of your graphics card is really awesome, then your decision has already been made.

Re: Continue at ETH or become pilot at SWISS?

You are about 20 years too late to be a pilot...Those were the golden years of SWISS AIR pilots when they were easily earning 15-20k a month...

Why do you want to be a pilot in the 21st century? You are paid peanuts, you work a tremendeous amount of time and you do a job that today a monkey can do succesfully. Push 3 buttons, land.

That's not at all what a Computer engineer does. Besides being simplistic it is almost an insult to the profession. It's like saying that a doctor only prescribes pills or signs your sick leave.

IT engineering is an enormous world and it requires a vast knowledge to be 'good' at it. Please inform yourself better before posting.

Until it goes wrong... as the AF447 incident showed... they did't manage to fly so succesfully! The problem with modern pilots, is they don't know how to fly.

Re: Continue at ETH or become pilot at SWISS?

I haven't read all the Responses but I think being a Pilot and Family life (from when you have Kids) is pretty incompatible. So, since you're so Young, if you really wanna live your dream of being a Pilot, I say do it now, then it 10 years or so, when you're thinking of settling down, becoming a dad, or you've already had Kids and miss them from up there in the skies, take up studying again and settle for a Lifestyle with normal Office hours and Close to home, that will enable you to have a pleasant work-life Balance.

My 2 Cents.

Why not? It's not as though there are that many to read.
If you had bothered you'd have realised that the OP is most insistent on the fact that he had no intention of having ever having a family life.... sub-text, he's almost certainly gay.
We all know that that doesn't exclude the desire for kids (nor the possibility of having them), but he's still very young!

What the hell?? How do you figure that?

I am straight and I have never wanted kids... can't stand them.

I have gay friends who are married, married with kids or permanently single... one is a serial engager but never actually manages to get married. Like wise I have many straight friends who fall into the same categories.

Nice girl/man whatever your preference in the pub, she/he asks you "what do you do for a living then?" Oh I`m a computer engineer = go home alone.

Or "what do you do for a living then?" Oh I`m a pilot for Swiss = go home not alone.

Now it may be a simple analogy but it will be important. So are you a Mr Bean or a Captain Flasheart?

Re: Continue at ETH or become pilot at SWISS?

Maybe I can only say with some theoretical background: go with your heart.

You're young, so time is on your side.

All I can say is that if you decide to train to be a pilot, be a pilot that cares about their job and their passengers. When pilots truly become mere glorified bus drivers, they will be better replaced with robots.

I would take the pilot training with both hands, you can always train to be an IT Wallah/desk monkey.
