MIGROS expanding into Germany

I knew that Migros-Zürich a while ago purchased TEGUT in Thüringen, Bayern and Hessen, but not only learnt that DEPOT is to open a shop in Zch HB but that Migros has taken over a majority in this Company

Migros had a store in Freiburg for some years. I think they took over a local store at the time and it was quite popular. But they've withdrawn from that venture, selling out to one of the German chains (can't remember which).

Interestingly, Migros managed to position itself in Germany as an up market and quality brand with lots of exclusive and artisanal products. They might have done better to use the Globus brand for that to avoid confusion, especially being so close to the border that many customers would have been aware of Migros in Switzerland.

Their entire foreign expansion strategy seems to be a sgall we shan't we indecisiveness.

Re: MIGROS expanding into Germany

Good news! Then I hope they give up again, as when they closed the Migros in Lörrach a few years ago they sold a lot of their stock at about 90% off. I bought so much stuff I had to cycle over multiple times to carry it all.

Re: MIGROS expanding into Germany

They come back? Nobody in Lörrach understood how they could close a place making such good business. ReWe never managed to get as much Swiss customers as Micros could. Interesting to see if they want the Lörrach place back :-)

Re: MIGROS expanding into Germany

Both TEGUT and DEPOT are totally different concepts. Interesting is that TEGUT has a big assortment of wines and otherwise is into a market-segment close to the one of Globus. While DEPOT from their WEBsite looks a bit like a RAMSCH.LADE. Back to TEGUT. This company does NOT belong to the MIGROS GENOSSENSCHAFTBUND but to M-ZüRICH and is only active in Bayern, Hessen, Thüringen

Isn't that distinction ultimately one of accounting?

Re: MIGROS expanding into Germany

Depot will open a sizeable shop in Zch-HB, in the place where Photo-Ganz used to be. Strange, but THEY are the experts and not me.

Migros won't be able to compete with LIDL or ALDI. Migros is too expensive!

It's got the MIGROS brand, also in orange, but inside it didn't feel like a MIGROS in CH. z.B. the way merchandise is laid out was different, not as many self-branded products on shelves, and I don't remember for sure, but I think they had either tobacco or alcohol in store, cause I vaguely remember my boyfriend pointed that out.

Hasn't Migros just bought another German chain of supermarket stores? Thought I saw something the other day that they had, but can't find any info now.
